3D Benchmarks
The following hardware and software configurations were used in all testing:
  • Power Mac G5 dual 2.5 GHz
  • 2 GB PC3200 SDRAM
  • ATI Radeon X800 XT (retail)
  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (retail)
  • ATI Radeon 9600 XT (OEM)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL

  • Mac OS X 10.3.7
  • Quake 3: Arena 1.32b (demo four)
  • Unreal Tournament 2004 v3339 (Antalus flyby)
  • Halo 1.5
  • Splinter Cell 1.0 (1_1_1TbilisiDemo)
  • The NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL and GeForce FX 5200 Ultra were omitted from testing due to time and availability constraints. Their benchmarks will be added at a future date if circumstances permit.

    Quake 3: Arena

    Sound On

    Sound Off

The Radeon X800 XT outperforms the GeForce 6800 Ultra in Quake 3: Arena at every resolution, regardless of whether sound is on or off. Surprisingly, even the Radeon 9600 XT and 9800 Pro top the GeForce 6800 Ultra at 640x480. This may be due in part to its slower core clock and/or ATI's more efficient drivers.

    Unreal Tournament 2004

    No FSAA/No AF

    4xFSAA/8xAF

In Unreal Tournament 2004, the GeForce 6800 Ultra edges out the Radeon X800 XT. But once full scene anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are enabled, the tables are completely turned. The GeForce 6800 Ultra's performance drops off so severely after 800x600, that it finds the "lowly" Radeon 9800 Pro nipping at its heels. The Radeon X800 XT enjoys a comfortable 75% lead at high resolution. Forty-seven frames per second is certainly a playable framerate, but when playing online against human opponents, the difference is magnified.
