There are plenty of graphics options available to get speed boosts out of older machines, but all I can tell you is that on dual 2.5 G5 machine, with everything turned up to maximum settings, the game ran smoother than a spider sprinting to dinner on its own web.

Iíve been enjoying the single player campaign, as painfully slow as my own personal progress seems to be, but I havenít been able to get a multiplayer game going over the internet. MP style games versus the CPU reveal a predictable formula that leads to a series of the gameís signature battles. Everyone starts with a ship and a resource collector or two, and you have to build your fleet and wipe out your opponent.

But the game does not have a built in multiplayer mode for internet play. Well, thatís not quite true. You can play direct TCP games or LAN games from the game menu, but to find a game on the internet with the IP address youíll need to use GameRanger. So far, that hasnít worked out too well for me. While reports occasionally trickle in of players who have managed to get an internet game going, most posts on our forums reveal the same problems Iíve had: the game tries to connect but canít find the host. Iíve heard that routers and firewall issues may be to blame, but the read me file doesnít mention any ports that can be opened to get around this. A new patch was supposed to address the issue but I have yet to get a GameRanger HW2 game to work.

I wonít say itís an impossible task, just that itís been too much work for no reward as of yet.

And finally, an obligatory note must be made here. The Mac version is only compatible with other Mac versions of the game. Once the multiplayer issues are worked out I hope there will be more players available on GameRanger, but for now youíll need to focus on your single player campaign.

Final Thoughts
Iím really enjoying this game, and will probably be playing it for some time to come. Iím hoping to get the multiplayer game part going soon, and I fully expect to get slaughtered by the other players, even if theyíve never played the game before. But I donít care, the game is a blast just to play and the visuals just make it that much better. I donít think it has the range of play to make it the game Iíd want with me if I were stranded on a desert island, but itís definitely enough to keep me entertained for the immediate future.

ē Pretty pixels
ē Challenging game play
ē Clever use of 3D space

ē High learning curve might turn away more casual gamers
ē Limited multiplayer pool at the moment
