Quake 3

Quake 3: Arena tests were based on the 1.32 (G4 build) Demo Four timedemo test, with sound on and the graphics setting set to highest, including Geometric and Texture detail.

Quake 3, having been optimized for multiple processors, shows an astounding speed increase, resulting in speeds almost 22.5 times as fast as the first generation G4 desktop, and running almost 13 times faster than the 667 G4 PowerBook at the lowest resolution. At 1024x768, the highest resolution our G4’s Rage 128 could output consistently, the G5, equipped with the slowest graphic card, still outperformed the G4 by a margin of 20.5 to 1.

In all Quake 3 tests, the Radeon 9800-equipped G5 outperformed the other graphics cards by a significant margin, especially at the higher resolutions. All three cards sported better results in OS X 10.3 than in 10.2.8, with an increase of almost 10 frames per second at the lowest resolution.

Unreal Tournament 2003

The UT 2K3 tests were also set at the highest graphics settings, with the OpenAL fix installed on all computers. We ran UT 2K3 through the Antalus Bot test, testing the CPU speed, and the Antalus Flyby test, testing the speed of the GPU cards.

In the OS X 10.2.8 tests, the GeForceFX 5200, surprisingly, pumped out the best speeds in the Antalus Botmatch test at 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions, displaying frames between 1% and 2% faster than the Radeon 9600, and between 2% to 6% faster than the Radeon 9800. Once we increased the resolution however, the ATI cards took the lead, with the 9600 outperforming the other cards at 1024x768, at the 9800 outperforming its competition at the two highest resolutions. In the Flyby tests, the 9800 Pro practically dominated the competition, especially at the highest resolutions.

The OS X 10.3 results show that of the three cards, the Radeon 9800 gains an even greater advantage than its competitors, dominating both the botmatch and flyby tests. Once again, the 9800 seems to really take the lead in resolutions of 1024x768 and higher. Comparing all the results between the two operating systems, it’s clear that 10.3 is decidedly faster for games than the older system, boasting speed increases of up to 10% in the flyby tests and up to 28% in the botmatch tests.
