Review:

All the way back in 2006 Relic Entertainment released Company of Heroes, a then revolutionary take on strategy, offering a cinematic campaign detailing events from D-Day itself and a number of other pivotal battles and moments in WW2. They subsequently released two expansion packs, Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor, which all got bundled into a complete edition. Just released on the Mac courtesy of Aspyr Media, now Mac gamers can partake in this acclaimed strategy series.

Gameplay

What separates Company of Heroes from most RTS games is the way tactics work. Cover is a vital part of every fight. No one just sits out in the open and dukes things out. If you try to go that way you will find your squads and tanks cut to pieces very quickly. Instead, you make use of light, medium and heavy cover to shield your troops and have the most effective means of combat. Tanks are strongest from the front, and are susceptible to hits from the side and rear. Fail to position them properly and enemy tanks and anti-tank infantry will quickly ruin you.

You have three resources in Company of Heroes: Manpower, Munitions and Fuel. You generate these by capturing points in each mission. Every map is divided up into sections, with a resource point in every sector to capture. Capture the point, and you gain the sector, increasing your manpower and resource income. Some units have the ability to build a defensive turret, or an observation point over the post, giving a resource and defensive bonus to that sector.

Realistic physics also play a part in battles. Most tanks can smash through walls and run over obstacles, creating new paths and flanking options. Bullets often go astray and rockets frequently miss, creating a realistic sense of ballistics. Tank shells and grenades will do horrible things to infantry units, sending bodies and limbs flying through the air. Vehicles can get disabled or go out of control, wildly crashing into nearby troops or structures, whether they be friend or foe.

There's a lot to keep track of in any given moment. Heavy machine gun units can suppress enemy infantry with a hail of bullets, causing them to be pinned down and crawl for cover. Incendiary mortars and flamethrowers can burn out entrenched buildings. Engineers can set up all manner of tank traps, mines, barbed wire, sand bags, MG emplacements and base structures. Anti-tank guns can load armor piercing rounds for increased effectiveness. You need to be constantly defending and taking new sectors, or fall behind.

It's rare you will control individual infantry, excepting snipers as they are comprised of squads of 3-4 men. Every squad type usually has multiple special abilities like building defenses, grenade types or suppressive fire. Every squad also has unique gun upgrades to equip them with like RPGs, assault rifles, flamethrowers and more. Squads can also pick up guns dropped from enemy squads like light machine guns, RPGs, or even man artillery, anti-tank guns and other weapons liberated from the enemy. All units also gain up to three levels of veterancy, allowing you to select an offensive or defensive bonus at each rank. Veteran units can also be recruited in later missions should they survive.

Armor receives just as much attention as infantry. There are a large number of jeeps, light vehicles and tanks available for every situation. Most of them can also be upgraded with improved weapons, armor, or specializations like mine or tank trap clearing bulldozer options. A good mix of armor and infantry will give you the best chance of securing victory, as only ground troops can secure points. Any infantry is easily defeated by enemy armor unless equipped with anti-tank weapons. This creates a semi rock-paper-scissors situation, but overall there's a lot of flexibility in unit types and choice, and unit upgrades allow you to combat situations on the fly.
