Asphalt 6: Adrenaline September 2, 2011 | IMG Staff | |
Requirements: Mac OS X: 10.6.6 | CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4 GHz | RAM: 2 GBReview: by Dan Pallone II I have played numerous racing games to date, but Gameloft's Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is one of the most addictive games I’ve played in a long time. I enjoy games where you get to play with many exotic racing cars from around the world. I like the ability to upgrade your vehicle based on success, destruction caused, drift attained, and speed in the completion of a race. I exploded with joy over all of the customization options for my cars. After upgrading I jumped back into a race, only this time trying to achieve the most destruction possible!I can safely say that I had so much fun completing my career that I was eager to try online play, only to find that is was very lacking. The online portion was a big disappointment. I was repeatedly disconnected and there were only three other people online to play with, leaving me with the option of playing against the online CPU. All of the razzle dazzle went out of my fingertips and I walked away wanting more… Story What? This game had a story? Funny, I didn’t even notice. I was too wrapped up in trying out the next vehicle that I skipped all the story rhetoric and went straight to the countdown. Much fun!The Cars Wow, they have so many cars to enjoy. In most games I like to point monger. So, I spent more time deciding which car would do better in the next race than the look or sound of my engine. Although, toward the end of the career I started to purchase cars based on their appearance and not their top speed. The graphics for the cars were very good, life like. I thoroughly enjoyed the rendering of the cars.Single Player Most of the time I was playing A6 in single player mode. With the career mode you get to challenge yourself by trying to complete the laps faster, knocking out bad guys who use their many underlings to reduce your chances of beating the lap time, getting the required amount of drift, trying to stay in one piece, or even some combination of these goals. I played the game so much I had to buy a new keyboard because the Mac keyboard just does not do well with holding down the accelerate key and drifting left at the same time. The game is very addictive. I loved hearing the roar of my engine when I hit the adrenaline key to accelerate and - Woosh, baby!Multiplayer There are two modes for multiplayer The first is a local area network player mode and the second is the online mode. As I mentioned earlier online play was a huge disappointment. I went from being excited about this game raising the bar with online play against human players to disappointed at the sparse number of opponents. The lack of players online left me playing against the AI. I checked in three different times and only three other players were playing while I was online. Color me very disappointed. I was also disconnected three times while waiting in the lobby to jump into a game to play. Playing a local LAN game was a whole different story. The game was much more fun playing against others. I still think that I only lost to my daughter because I was on a wireless connection and my wife closed the door to the living room, where the wireless router was. Multiplayer LAN was easy to setup and play but it lacked a form of ratings that the online multi-player option offered. Final Thoughts If you are looking for a good game to play online and get a lot of interactivity with other players, pass on this one. Also pass if you're wanting a real world look from behind the driver’s seat, amazing sunrises and distance details with people walking around the streets as you pass by. This game is missing the real life feel of high speed city driving. Total playing time is also an issue with only 30 hours to complete 100% of career mode and get all of the cars and options. On the other hand, are you looking for a game with explosive action? Looking for a nice selection of cars? Love achievement based games? Can't wait to customize your vehicles with your winnings? Want to play a LAN racing game that rocks? Then, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is the game for you. Pros: • Addictive gameplay • Great selection of cars • Good return on your investmentCons: • Buggy online mode • Few players online • World lacks detail
