Review:
Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a new game from European Indie developers 11 Bit Studios. In this clever twist on the "tower defense" genre, you play the units on the ground instead of the towers trying to stop them.

Aliens have invaded the earth, taking over the major cities and erecting various towers and buildings through the streets. The campaign sees you going through the war-torn streets of Baghdad and Tokyo, battling your way through the alien towers to complete your objectives. Ultimately, you discover the alien mothership and face off in an epic battle for the future of the planet.

The player takes control of the Commander, a powerful support unit with no attacks of his own, but capable of repairing your squad, diverting enemy attention and calling down explosive airstrikes. While your squad must follow an exact route through the streets, the Commander is free to roam as he likes.

At the beginning of each mission you can choose your squad and plan your initial route. You have up to 6 types of vehicles to put into your squad, which gradually get unlocked as you complete the campaign. Various tanks, APCs, missile launchers and shield generators are available to mix and match in your squad. A simple interface allows you to buy, sell, upgrade and change the formation of your squad. There are small elements of strategy in play as you must decide on vehicle formation, and what you want to spend your finite amount of cash on when picking your squad. It makes for good fun, but you are never locked in as you are given the opportunity to buy or sell squad units along the way.

Enemies prove to varied and difficult enough to put up a good challenge. There are 6 different alien towers, ranging from a basic laser tower to the monstrous Behemoth, who can annihilate your squad in moments unless you lay down a smoke field or distract it with a decoy from the Commander. Two other towers stand out, one that disrupts your squad and makes them attack your Commander, and another which drains energy from your Commander and then sends out a burst of energy, regenerating every alien tower in the area. These will quickly ruin your plans unless you take care of them fast. The first time you encounter them makes for a tough difficulty spike, but once you get the hang of it you relish the challenge.
