After years and years of waiting (4 years, to be exact), the release of Fighter Squadron: Screaming Demons over Europe for the Mac is nearly upon us. This flight combat game was released a little over a year ago on the PC by Activision. After its PC release, Parsoft--the company that developed the game--folded, with the hopes of a Mac version dying with it. But this summer, United Developers announced that they would be bringing Fighter Squadron to the Mac.Fighter Squadron, for the most part, is an action-oriented flight combat sim. There's no campaign mode, nor long, drawn out missions. Instead the designers chose to concentrate on dogfighting. But that's not to say that Fighter Squadron is an arcade shooter. The game is highly detailed, contains unique and challenging missions, and has outstanding AI and physics that set it apart from all the other flight sims out there. Serve Your Country Fighter Squadron takes place during World War II in Europe. In all, the game comes with 90 single-player missions, set in three theaters: Dover, Africa, and the Rhineland. You have the chance to fly 10 planes from that era. On the American side, you'll be able to fly chose planes such as the P-51 Mustang and the P-38 Lightning. On the English side, the venerable Spitfire will be at your service. On the German side you'll even have the chance to fly the Me 262, the jet fighter that wrecked havoc during the later years of the war. And for an added twist, you'll also have a chance to fly bombers in Fighter Squadron, including the work horse of World War II, the B-17 Flying Fortress.Once you select a country to fly for and pick a squadron, you're ready for some action. Missions tend vary in the game. You'll be able to choose from escorts, ground attacks, sweeps, bomb runs, and other typical WW II missions. And unlike other flight combat sims where you're required to complete one mission before moving on to the next, Fighter Squadron lets you pick the mission you want to play.
