Graphics As in PomPom’s previous release Space Tripper, Mutant Storm features beautiful, psychedelic OpenGL environments with brightly-coloured, vibrant and glowy objects. PomPom re-designed their Space Tripper OpenGL engine by enhancing the particle effects and animation routines and adding support for Sam Lantinga's Simple DirectMedia Layer library, resulting in jaw-dropping visuals. The red shields breathe as they regenerate. The level’s borders shimmer with energy. The evil mutants move with either organic fluidity or menacing mechanical evil. The game’s graphic design is also spectacular – the mutant hordes are detailed in evil glows and menacing colours. The design is such that even surrounded by huge numbers of alien oppressors, players can easily and quickly tell the evil aliens apart from the much-lauded power-ups. Furthermore, the trippy, psychedelic environments that frame every level add to the overall visual quality of the game. Multiplayer The demo version of Mutant Storm supplied to IMG for our preview contained a beta multiplayer mode, allowing two players to participate head to head in the mutant carnage. According to PomPom, multiplayer mode will be both co-operative and competitive, meaning players will have to work together to clear levels of the alien masses while competing against each other for the highest score. Resources, such as extra lives and smart bombs, and level bonuses are shared collectively, however the engine tracks each player’s progress in the game through scoring percentages, determining which player is more responsible for the overall score. Initial game requirements are low – any 400 MHz G3 or G4 Mac equipped with a decent graphics card should do the trick. The game will be released for OS X first, with a possible OS 9 version later if PomPom receives enough requests. A nine-level demo will be made available on the PomPom website, however a $20 US or twenty Euros registration fee will be required for the full version of game. Currently Mutant Storm is undergoing final testing in anticipation for its upcoming release in the next few days. Stay tuned to IMG as news of PomPom’s newest game progresses.
