It is a safe bet that if you have been playing computer games for any length of time, you have heard of Myst or its sequels Riven and Myst III: Exile. Brothers Rand and Robyn Miller developed Myst and Riven. The third installment of the Myst world was released by Presto Studios and UbiSoft. Myst was a breakthrough in gaming in several ways. It was one of the first big titles to utilize the CD-ROM format. It was also fairly unique in that the player could look and explore just about everywhere. It was a lush and enveloping environment. People playing Myst reported late for work and were missed by their family and friends. Myst drew critical acclaim from all corners of the industry and is still, I am sure, played today by those who just cannot get enough of those inscrutable puzzles. I am also sure there are some who just have not yet figured out the correct notes to activate the linking book in the spaceship. Looking back on Myst and then looking at the games we have today, it is amazing to see how far games have come. Myst, and subsequent copycat titles, forced the player along set paths and did not open other areas for exploration. Oh sure, there was a great deal to see in each of the Myst ages; however, it was a look-don’t-touch sort of environment. The rich graphics invited you to touch everything, but like the exhibits in a museum, they were untouchable. And while Myst set a new standard for realistic and inviting environments, it was still not a true 3D space for the gamer to explore. The game controlled where you could go and where you could not. Many games no longer restrict player movement within the 3D space occupied by the game. Most games allow players to run, jump, spy and shoot from just about every location that is physically possible to reach – and some locations not physically possible to reach. RealMyst changes that. In fact, unlike most remakes, realMyst one-up’s the original with new music and even more breathtaking scenery. Reincarnated Mac publisher MacPlay will be bringing realMyst to the Mac universe more than a year after it was released to the PC crowd. The Story You stumble across an old battered book and pick it up. Suddenly you find yourself transported to the magical islands of Myst. Myst is one of many alternate realms constructed by an ancient civilization named the D'ni. When Atrus discovers Myst, he notices that something has gone terribly wrong....his creations are being destroyed by someone else's greed. What's worse, both of Atrus' two sons, Sirrus and Achenar, have been captured and imprisoned inside two magical linking books. With no further clues to help you, you decide to go on a search for the missing pages of these books. By recovering the pages, you hope to help free Atrus' two sons. But when you discover a note from Atrus stating that he now suspects one of his sons to be the root of his betrayal, you are again completely puzzled as to the true nature of your quest in Myst. Not knowing which one to trust, who should you save? Pieces of this mystery are then slowly revealed to you as you wander around this mysterious world and decipher the many mechanical contraptions left behind by the former inhabitants of Myst. In the end, your final salvation will only come if you make the correct choice--a choice that will finally unlock the ancient betrayal of ages past. The Graphics realMyst features a realtime 3D engine delivering full screen graphics in place of the classic pre-rendered shots. All the graphic elements have been upgraded to 32-bit color and new sound effects have also been added to an original soundtrack with digitally re-mastered music. Animations and movies and are now larger and in higher quality. In the game players will get to explore the world as the Miller brothers intended them to with the original. Players will be able to explore just about everywhere. The areas outside of the original’s predetermined paths are now mostly available for exploration. For example, the player can now take a direct route or a more circuitous route through the trees to the clock tower on Myst island rather than staying on the main path. The water in all the ages now has depth and movement to make it more realistic. Light and shadows move and change their hue. The realtime 3D engine allows the incorporation of dynamic special effects that brings the world of Myst to full, vibrant life. There are also now day and night cycles, dynamic lighting, weather effects including thunderstorms, roiling water, and fluttering wildlife such as birds and butterflies.
