The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena April 11, 2010 | Ted Bade | |
These games have a lot of intense action and motion. But it is not always fight, win, then move onto the next battle. Often there is a puzzle or a task that must be completed to move on. Sneaking by enemies is often an option. Weapons range from bare fists (Riddick is really really good with hand to hand), to knives, awls, and other things that one can stick into someone to hurt or kill them, then onto pistols, assault rifles, shotguns and more. In Butcher Bay, the almost impossible to destroy enemy is a guard in an armored riot suit. This one man tank can do a lot of damage to unruly prisoners. Later, when Riddick manages to get into one of the suits, he gets the chance to enjoy the fun. Fist fights and hand weapons play a major role in the earlier parts of the game. Both of the games have hidden items to locate which, when discovered, unlock images and information about people or objects in the game. While these items have almost no effect on the game (other then educating the player about some aspects of the world they are enjoying), it adds an exploration dimension to the experience. I personally enjoy exploring the interesting and well designed environments in many games. I think a lot of people rush through to finish the main goal and miss out on enjoying the scenery. This side aspect to the game gives the player a reason to just look around while they are playing. I like it! Although both games included in The Chronicles of Riddick are several years old the graphics look good and quite realistic. There are a lot of video scenes in Chronicles. Once the player has successfully completed some action or moved to the correct spot, a short video plays adding to the story, or providing a clue to what is about to happen, and sometimes both. Audio is what would be expected from a game like this. The quite vulgar dialog in Chronicles contributes significantly to the game's 17+ ESRB rating. By the way, Vin Diesel, who played Riddick in the movies, voiced the verbal dialog for the Riddick character. Overall, I think this game will be a lot of fun. While the story could be a bit more detailed it does add significantly to the ambience of the game, which is essentially a first person shooter. If you like games of this genre, you will probably want to give this one a try. Great job Atari, and a very big thank you to the guys at Virtual programming for doing the work of bringing this game to the Macintosh!
