Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII August 23, 2004 | Tuncer Deniz | |
Apsyr's release of Battlefield 1942 earlier this summer was easily one of the eagerly anticipated releases of the year. Although the game is now well over two years old, it is still wildly popular online thanks to its expansion packs and free mods such as Desert Combat. Now Aspyr is preparing to release Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII, the second expansion pack for the game. While Road to Rome, the expansion pack included with the original game, included mainly new maps, Secret Weapons adds a number of new vehicles and weapons that help spice up the gameplay. Secret Weapons The highlight of the expansion pack are the new vehicles and weapons. All of them were either briefly used or on the drawing board during WWII. These wild and sometimes whacky items add tremendous new life to the game and creates some interesting gameplay.By far one of the coolest things in the expansion pack is the new rocket pack which was actually being developed by the Germans but never made it past initial tests. After you pick it up, you'll be able to blast into the air at short intervals. While you won't be able to hover with the rock pack, you can jump atop buildings, cross bridgeless rivers, and more. Like other vehicles in the game, once you lose the rocket pack, you'll have to wait until it respawns on the map to use it. Another weapon include the Axis Natter, a one-man rocket plane. This single-engine interceptor is expendable--you take off, unload your unguided rockets on any incoming enemy bombers, then you bail out. Don’t worry, you have a parachute. Another new item, the Wasserfall guided rocket is controlled from a friendly base and allows you to guide the rocket while peeking out from the nose of the rocket. The rocket is extremely fast and takes quite a bit of practice to guide the missile to your target. One fun addition to aircraft in the game is the Goblin. Considerably smaller than any other plane in the game (oh, and it's jet powered) the Goblin is the fastest and most maneuverable aircraft out there. The biggest addition to the game is the C-47 Cargo plane which allows your team to transport large groups of soldiers to the front lines as quickly as possible. The plane's biggest asset, however, is that it acts as a mobile spawn point, so you no longer have to run all the way back to the action after you die. Players simply spawn on the plane and parachute out. Other vehicles in the expansion pack include the Horton Flying Wing. This impressive bomber allows you to cruise to your target at a whopping 805 mph at sea level. Other new vehicles include the Flakpanzer tank, which storms along with four anti-aircraft guns, and an amphibious jeep called the Schwimmwagen that can drive from dry land right into the water and across rivers. Eight New Maps Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII includes eight new maps including Eagle's Nest, Gothic Lane, Essen, Kbely Airfield, Hellendoorn, Mimoyecques, Peenemunde, and Telemark Research Base. While most of the maps are similar to the original Battlefield 1942 maps, what sets them apart is a new goal-oriented scenario instead of the traditional hold and control maps found in the original game (though you'll still be able to play conquest modes on these new maps as well). For example, in Mimoyecques, the Allies must destroy a V3 rocket by dropping bombs down ventilation shafts. On another map, Hellendoorn, the Brits must destroy four V2 rockets.Battlefield Fun All in all the expansion pack is looking to be a must have. As the expansion pack gets closer to release, we'll be posting a hands-on preview of the pack. In the meantime, be sure to check out some of the cool screenshots and movies from the game.
