Thanks to the rapid evolution of computers and game consoles, most classic game genres have already taken the step into the 3D world. There is one specific genre that took a while longer than most to step into the third dimension. Turn based ballistic shooters, with the Worms series as the most famous example, have always relied so heavily on the limits of two dimensions that it felt almost impossible to add a third. However, Team17 decided that they wanted to try to add the 3D twist to their popular Worms series. And they done it with success. Worms 3D was successfully launched last year for Windows and consoles will be released shortly on the Mac by Feral Interactive and the experienced porting crew at Zonic.

The original Worms is the only game in the series that made it to the Mac, if you don’t count the puzzle game Worms Blast, which was released by Feral early last year. Many Mac users might be unaware of the changes that Worms 2, Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party brought to the series. Worms 3D, however, includes most of the new weapons and modes from the latest 2D installations of the series, but with an added extra dimension.

The change into 3D hasn't altered the basic gameplay of Worms much. You still take turns using whatever weapons you have at your disposal. For those that haven’t played any of the Worms games, the arsenal is extremely diverse and ranges from more standard weapons such as Bazooka, Grenade, Cluster Bomb, Uzi, Shotgun and Dynamite to extremely insane weapons such as Holy Handgrenade, Sheep, Mad Cow, Old Lady, Homing Pigeon and Super Sheep. Besides these and a lot more weapons, there are also other tools to help your worms get across the map, such as Ninja Rope, Parachute, Girders and the über-cool Jet Pack.

The original Worms only had one game mode, with minor variations. Worms 3D, on the other hand, pulls off such a huge variation that it can almost be overwhelming at first. Besides normal death-matches, it pulls off several types of challenges, a campaign mode that challenges the intellect as well as the ability to hit your enemy with the bazooka, and online multiplayer where Mac players can head out against each other through the GameRanger online gaming service, or through an in-game LAN multiplayer browser.
