Battlefield 1942 Q&A With Aspyr

This morning IMG held an impromptu question and answer session with Aspyr's Glenda Adams to get some answers for some of the more frequently asked questions readers have been asking via email and in the IMG forum about the upcoming Mac version of Battlefield 1942.

Here's the brief Q&A:

Question: How long has battlefield 1942 been in development for the Mac and who is working on the port?

Answer: We started development in December, so we've been working on it for about 3 or 4 months. It is being done by Aspyr Studios, our internal group. Mark Krenek is the lead programmer, and John Butler is also working on it. We will eventually have up to 5 programmers doing some code on it, and will have someone available for spot maintenance at any time over the next few years. This is the biggest development commitment Aspyr has ever made.

Question: People are asking about PC to Mac networking. Will you be able to play against PC players?

Answer: Yes, that was the main reason for us doing BF1942 Mac- to let Mac users play against the huge number of PC users out there. We actually had the first PC to Mac network game up and running on Monday, so that was a great milestone to hit.

Question: Will there be an OS X Dedicated Server version of BF 1942?

Answer: We're actually researching that right now. We want to build one, but we aren't sure if it will be part of the shipping DVD or released later. Our main goal is to get a good stable client out by June.

Question: Will Mac gamers be able to play popular mods for BF 1942 such as Desert Combat?

Answer: We're going to do our best to make sure the most popular mods all work fine on the Mac. So far we haven't seen any hurdles to get them to work, and we have already planned to do internal testing on Desert Combat to make sure it works as well as the PC. Mods are such a big part of the game we really want to get them right.

Question: Final question: When do you expect the game to be released?

Answer: We are pushing for a June release. It's going to be a hot summer for Mac gamers!

Battlefield 1942 was announced for the Macintosh last Thursday. IMG has posted a first look preview of the game. Be sure to check it out of you haven't already done so.
