Mac Descent 3 Update Coming 7:59 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story
Kevin Bentley, one of the original programmers on Parallax Software's Descent series, has sent news that a new Descent 3 update is in the works. In a recent post to the Descent Bulletin Board forums, Bentley announced that he's managed to get his hands on the original source code for the Mac OS and Linux versions of the game and has started the task of updating the code of the four-year-old title for today's computers. Apart from optimizing the code to take advantage of modern operating systems and graphics hardware, Kevin has announced that he will be re-working the network code in order to make PXO - Parallax's free proprietary online gaming service - and Direct IP games interchangeable. While the Linux port will be tackled first, Kevin expects that the Mac port won't take too long to complete. Kevin has also announced that he will soon be looking for volunteers willing to beta test the patch once it's complete. Fans of the game interested in the new update should keep an eye on the Descent Bulletin Board, accessible through the link below.
