Uplink Interview 8:44 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
Gaming site Gamer's Hell recently conducted an interview with Thomas Arundel of Introversion Software, with the focus of the interview being on Introversion's first title, Uplink. This unique game puts gamers in the persona of a skilled hacker who accepts various jobs throughout his career, which eventually culminate into deciding the fate of the Internet itself. For those wondering how the game itself plays, Arundel offers a description of a sample mission: You connect by bouncing your signal off 15 other computers and, bang, you're in. But the trace tracker is beeping at you. You've got 30 seconds . . . 20 seconds and you've found the guy . . . 10 seconds and you've changed his criminal record - now he's doing life for murder . . . 5 seconds and you're deleting the log files, the trace tracker is frantically beeping at you, barely keeping up with your heart rate . . . your mouse is a blur as you scrabble to disconnect with half a second to spare. A minute later (having sped up game time) you check the news and your victim has been arrested. You check your bank and it's 5,000 credits up, it's time to buy some shares and tinker with the Stock Market before your next mission. Interestingly enough, Arundel notes that Uplink has been complimented by IT professionals, hackers, and Linux users as well as gamers. However, he adds that the game offers a simplified overview of hacking, making it accessible to non-hackers as well. The rest of the interview covers topics such as the ethics of hacking, released extensions, and more on the gameplay itself. Those interested can find the full read at Gamer's Hell. As reported earlier this month by IMG, Ambrosia has announced its intentions to publish a Mac version of Uplink, which is currently in the works by Contraband. Contraband's site currently lists its status as "Very Soon."
