Independent developer Frictional Games has announced the June release of Penumbra: Overture for Mac OS X users. The first person survival horror title was released in March for the Windows platform, in May the Linux version was finalized, and now in June Mac users will get a chance to experience the game.

Penumbra: Overture is a first person adventure game which focuses on story, immersion and puzzles. Instead of using violence to progress the player has to use his/her wits to guide the protagonist Philip on his quest to unravel the past. Played from a first person viewpoint, Penumbra: Overture is powered by a 3D engine and features an advanced physics system which allows for "never before seen" environment interaction. The player can open drawers, pull levers, pick up objects, and more using natural mouse movements creating a highly interactive and immersive game world.

The Mac and Linux port can be credited Edward Rudd who has been working together with us during almost the entire development to keep the game and engine up-to-date and running on all platforms.

Frictional Games is co-owned by Thomas Grip and Jens Nilsson. Jens has for almost a decade worked on games, the majority for the Mac. Previous work on Mac games includes audio for titles like Nanosaur, Captain Bumper, Tactical Ops and DeepTrouble 2.

The music in Penumbra: Overture is written by freelance musician Mikko Tarmia, another Mac oriented fellow that has previously done the music for all CodeBlender games such as DeepTrouble 1 & 2 and Rally Shift as well as work for other Mac developers.

It's been a long running passion within Frictional Games to see Penumbra: Overture on the Mac and it's great for us to finally be able to announce it as a reality. For those eager to try the game before the final release, you can help out by downloading the current beta release of the demo.
Penumbra: Overture is currently a Universal Binary running on Mac OS X 10.4. Preliminary requirements are: 1.5Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9600/GeForce 4(MX not supported) and 800MB of free disc-space.

The game runs on the internally developed HPL engine, featuring the latest graphics technologies using OpenGL, a solid implementation of the Newton Game Dynamics to power the physics and utilizing OpenAL for the audio.

This is the first release of a series of games, the second episode planned for a release this fall. Follow the links below for more information.
