Ambrosia To Publish Mac Defcon 10:57 AM | Tuncer Deniz | 19 comments
Ambrosia Software today announced that it will be publishing the Mac version of Defcon. The company hopes to ship the game before the end of the year. DEFCON is an online, competitive, multiplayer strategy game based around the theme of global thermonuclear war. The game, inspired by the 1983 cult-classic Wargames, superbly evokes the tension, paranoia and suspicion surrounding the Cold War era. The player assumes the role of a General hidden deep within an underground bunker, his mission being to successfully exterminate the enemy's civilian population whilst simultaneously disabling the enemy's ability to retaliate. Desperate attempts must be made to form fast, tactical alliances - alliances that may at any moment break-down to become treacherous and very deadly betrayals. A progress log update on Defcon Mac was recently posted on Ambrosia's forum: The alpha version shown in the screenshots plays a fine game of single-user Defcon, but there's still a bit more work left to make it a fully functional and polished Mac application. For instance, where the Windows version uses the system tray for status, we animate our Dock icon (which looks very cool, I have to say). In the mean time, Introversion will be working on enabling cross-platform multiplayer and fixing some internal bugs. We're holding off on doing a beta until all the work is done, and then we'll try to beta-test in parallel with Introversion's next Windows update. While a November release looks unlikely, the actually gameplay has already been tested to death on the Windows side, so we should be able to get it through beta much faster than usual.
