Nexuiz Promises Cross-platform Action for Free

A newly announced first-person shooter, Nexuiz, promises to bring straightforward multiplayer action to Mac, PC and Linux for free. The game is based on "Darkplaces," which is actually a highly modified version of the original Quake engine. It features realtime lights and shadows, particle effects, and an advanced menu system.

The goal of the Nexuiz developers is to "bring deathmatch back to the basics, with perfect weapon balancing and fast paced action." Here's more from the game's site:

It uses HFX textures by Evil Lair, and currently has 20 maps to frag in. With an advanced UI, the user can select between 15 different player models to use, and can connect to our master server to play people from all over the world.

Set to be released later this year, Nexuiz will not require a high end system. Video cards such as a Geforce1 will be able to run Nexuiz, while highend video cards will be able to take advantage of some features such as realtime lighting and bumpmapping.

For more on Nexuiz, check out their site, and watch for detail on a playable version in the future from IMG.
