Following up on the recent release of Unreal Tournament 2004 for the PC, GameSpy has posted a postmortem interview with Cliffy B, Lead Designer for Epic. The focus of the interview is largely on the various improvements found within UT2004 as well as discussion on some things that did not go as planned.

One of the points touched on early is the new Onslaught mode, which adds vehicles to the mix. Wishing to avoid making vehicles an overwhelming force, Cliffy points to the new weaponry available, such as spider mines and the anti-vehicle rocket launcher, as ways to keep things more balanced for players running around on foot.

He also comments on some key things that went right in development:

Having newbie testers beating on the game and watching it. There was a lot of this as we were developing Assault and it wound up yielding the various on-screen (and audio) indicators on where to go and what to do.
The rest of the postmortem discusses topics such as the feel of the game itself, bot AI improvement, and early bugs with vehicles.
