Dialup Version Of Myst Online?
3:49 PM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story

The fan site Riven Unofficial Home Page quotes Cyan CEO Rand Miller as saying a possibility exists for dial-up users to play their upcoming massively multiplayer online title, Myst Online. Miller notes that, "Cyan is looking into the possibility of a dialup version of Myst Online for players who don't have broadband."

More explanation is found on the site:

An article at a French web site quoted Rand as saying, "It's necessary to try to make the game available to the surfers who have slow modems. Some parts of the game work well on narrow bandwidth." A second article -- this one at -- seemed to confirm the possibility of a dialup version. The article said, "In order to attract the largest possible number of players, the game will also support text messages and more limited voice communication over a modem."
But Cyan's Richard Watson downplays the possibility of 56k support. Recently he was quoted as saying, "Broadband is where we're headed. If we are able to provide a subset of the experience to people without broadband then that would be a nice added bonus, but that is not our focus."
