On Friday, we reported that MacPlay's Sacrifice, the 3D real-time strategy game, had just gone gold and would be shipping "in time for the holidays." Today MacPlay sent us a few notes about the multiplayer component of Sacrifice and some memory issues under Mac OS 9.

In order to ship before the holidays, MacPlay decided to yank the multiplayer game from Sacrifice. A patch will be released with multiplayer support when it becomes available.

In what's probably one of the most bizarre bugs we've ever seen, MacPlay says that Sacrifice will not function properly under Mac OS 9 if you have more than 512 MB of memory. According to MacPlay, a "file mapping" bug in OS 9 is the problem.

A special insert in the Sacrifice box explains the details of the multiplayer component and memory issues:

At the time that Sacrifice went to production, Multiplayer support had not been fully implemented and tested. Rather than delay the release of the product, we chose to ship the product and deliver a patch for Multiplayer support via download when it is available. To check on patch availability please visit

Due to a bug in the Operating System, a key feature used in Sacrifice called File Mapping will not function under OS 9 if you have more than 512 MB of physical memory installed in your Macintosh. We have contacted Apple about this issue, but we currently do not have a timeframe in which it will be fixed. We recommend playing Sacrifice in OS X for those users that are affected by this problem.
