Inside Mac Games has posted a new preview of Avadon: The Black Fortress, the upcoming new RPG from indie developer Spiderweb Software. Avadon is described as an epic adventure in a strange and dangerous world in which players take the role of a spy and warrior who must fight the enemies of his homeland. Avadon: The Black Fortress will feature four different character classes, dozens of sidequests, hundreds of items to discover, and many different possible endings.
From the preview:
Jeff has said Avadon will be their best looking game to date, and it's true. The graphics are smooth and pleasing to the eye, and the excellent menus combined with a sharp and functional interface make for a very tidy appearance. There is also a significantly increased number of art assets and objects around in buildings and landscapes which adds great variety and detail when exploring or fighting. Sound remains minimal with no music (play your own in iTunes) but with enough ambient chatter in towns, and combat attacks and spells packing enough punch to be satisfying. Avadon may be old school, but it has modern sensibilities in design and features. There are handy points on the map and edge of the screen pointing you in the direction you need to go, and you can view the whole map with an easy overlay. Points of interest are clearly marked on your map once you've discovered them, presumably for later exploration or backtracking. When talking to a character, or being told to go see another NPC, you see their portrait and character design on the side, so you don't wander around wondering who you are supposed to find. And the previously mentioned skill tree and party selection features make leveling up and team-selection a lot of fun.
