GameSpy recently posted a short hands-on preview of Unreal Tournament 3, the eagerly awaited upcoming next installment in the popular first person shooter series from Epic Games. The preview gives a glimpse of the gameplay in UT 3's Warfare mode.

Our objective was to take over all the nodes on the map. There were about 16 players total with eight on each team. To take over a node you have to bring an orb from your base and place it into the next node on the grid. There are green lines on the minimap which tell you which nodes are fair game. There are also on-screen cues telling you where to go and what to do when you get there. Really, it's a great way to ease new players into the game.

For the first game we played to win. We ran the orb to the nearest node and took it easily. This was repeated until we got to the enemy's main node with two Manta ground-skimming hovercraft. We were able to knock out two defenders and pummel the enemy core into bits, swiftly ending the first round. From that short first round we learned a quite a bit. The first was that you cannot ride certain vehicles while carrying the orb. The second is that the hoverboard, which you activate by pressing Q, is a handy way to move the orb quickly. You're defenseless while you're on it, but you're also a relatively small, relatively fast target. The second is that all the classic UT weaponry is back in fine form, so UT vets will have no problem hopping right into the fray.
