Planet Civilization has posted a short article covering the educational value of Firaxis' Civilization series. Many teachers have found the game's interactivity motivates students to learn more about the history surrounding the governments represented in the game. This positive response from educators recently prompted Firaxis to open a Teacher Features webpage on their site to allow teachers to discuss the impact of games on learning.

At the 2005 Games in Education Conference, Civilization was one of the main examples for the educational use of games. Games improve learning not only because they are fun, but also because they allow the gamer to make decisions and see what happens."When you are the decision-maker in history, you propel yourself to higher levels of learning," says Deb Briggs of Firaxis Games. Civilization, in particular, is good at this. The player makes decisions for a whole civilization and sees the results.

Unlike the average American textbook, the game is not Euro-centric: "Why I prefer Civilization is because it cuts a much broader swath of history than do the texts," says Pat Seed of Rice University. Rice was also amazed by earlier Sid Meier titles such as Colonization, which offers the player to colonize by using different methods, depending on the nation chosen.
