Doom 3 Mac Tweaking Guide 9:31 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
Hot on the heels of the shipping of Doom 3, Bare Feats has posted a performace tweaking guide for players looking for performance gains. Much talk has been circulating in the Mac gaming community surrounding the system requirements and publicized benchmarks surrounding the anticipated FPS, and the guide seeks to show how best to tweak Doom 3 without sacrificing too much in visual quality. One of the suggested tweaks deals with ATI cards specifically: We used ATIccelerator II to overclock the Radeon X800 XT (core clock set 5% faster to 500MHz and memory clock set 10% faster to 1100MHz) in an attempt to get it up to the performance level of the Radeon X850 XT we used on the Dual Xeon. (This was done on a closed course by professionals. Don't try this at home.) For those looking for a little more information regarding the performance of Doom 3, Bare Feats has included an exerpt from Glenda Adams regarding optimizations and the key differences between Macs and PCs in relation to them. They've also included information on how folks can run their own benchmarks at home.A fairly busy thread on Doom 3 performance is also available in IMG's forums. Information from various notable sources such as Peter Cohen and Glenda Adams can be found there.
