Eschalon: Book III Previewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Game Banshee has posted a new preview of Basilisk Games' upcoming Eschalon: Book III. The final title in the old school fantasy RPG series gives players the chance to answer questions about four powerful gemstones and the clouded past of the protagonist.

If you've played the previous two Eschalon games, then the character system might sound familiar.  In fact, the engine for Book III as a whole looks like it's going to be almost identical to the engine for Book II.  You still need to eat and drink and repair equipment (although these rules can be toggled off), you still need to juggle the best way to see during nighttime and underground explorations (torches aren't convenient and frequently "blow out" now), and you can use skill books and trainers to improve your skills (and it looks like trainers will take you up to rank 8 now rather than just rank 5 like previously).

The main difference I saw between Book III and Book II is in the forage skill.  In Book II this skill was way too good; it reduced how quickly you became hungry and thirsty, it found alchemical ingredients for you when you rested, and it put those ingredients into bags, which in essence allowed you to create storage locations for yourself anywhere.  But now in Book III the skill only occasionally finds food (and supposedly ingredients at higher ranks) for you when you walk around.  I put five points into the forage skill, and the best thing I found was a lightweight fruit that maybe filled my hunger and thirst bars by 10%.  This is probably one of the parts of Book III that's going to see some adjustments before the game is released.

Shadowrun Online First Playable In Late March
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Cliffhanger Productions has released a new Kickstarter update with information about Shadowrun Online's progress and plans to have the first playable version of the game in late March. A separate project from Harebraned Schemes' single player focused Shadowrun Returns, Cliffhanger's title will center on multiplayer action with co-op gameplay and player vs player faction wars set in a persistent world.

We have our eyes set on a first playable version towards End of March. This will allow all of you to play a number of missions and get a good idea of the core gameplay (although obviously it will expand in variety), but it will not be the complete game (so you will have predefined characters for example). But at least it is something to finally put into the hands of our backers and fans.

So why does it take us so damn long? For one, as many of you know, we had to find more budget for the game whilst not going to a publisher to get it. This was not an easy task. It actually took us almost a year to get the game securely funded (in the way we wanted it). That is the harsh truth of an independent developer: Even projects of limited ambition are hard to do with a small team and an MMO for that matter is not an easy thing to create...

So the next weeks will be exciting as things finally come together – we have 5 new people in the team (welcome guys and girl!) to help us, greatly increasing the team size and we have an exciting and no doubt wild ride ahead of us. Expect more pictures of actual levels next time we do a game update (after a few more of the short stories our favorite and energetic writer Scott Schletz has whizzed up). It is getting real, folks (and about time, too)!
