IMG Interviews Jeff Vogel On 20 Years Of Spiderweb Software
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has posted a new interview with Spiderweb Software's Jeff Vogel about his company's twentieth anniversary. Among other things the veteran RPG developer discussed his games, the changes in the past two decades, the upcoming Avadon 2: The Corruption, and his views on Kickstarter.

When you consider the changes in the past 20 years: the growth of the internet, the ups and downs of Apple computer, the rise of social media, mobile gaming devices that seem to have come directly from Star Trek, etc. can you believe how much has happened in such a relatively short span of time?

JV: I can believe it's all happened, but it's still amazing. When I started out, the world wide web was barely a thing, it took me months to convince a bank to give me a credit card account because they didn't believe you could run a business on the internet, and Inside Mac Games was mailed to me on a plastic disc. A plastic disc!

A new class with associated unique abilities will be joining the roster in Avadon 2. What sort of role will the class fill?

JV: The new class will be the Tinkermage, a sort of cyberpunk magical engineer character. They're pretty cool.

Will a new NPC representing the class be a possible companion for players?

JV:Yes. His name is Alcander, and he's a hoot.

Control Command Escape Reviews Space Hulk
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 6 comments

Control Command Escape has posted a new review of Full Control's recently released Space Hulk. Based on the best-selling board game and set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Space Hulk is a 3D digital turn based strategy game that recreates "the classic claustrophobic board game experience."

Space Hulk then, is based on a very small corner of the universe. A Space Hulk is a derelict space craft (or collection of derelict space crafts). In the setting of the game, you control a squad of Space Marines (heavily armed and armoured genetically-modified super-soldiers) investigating a Space Hulk floating through deep space. It’s also home to a swarm of Genestealers though, who are a group of hive-mind creatures that are like a cross between the Zerg and Alien.

You must lead your squad through a series of missions, each time coming up against the Genestealers, trying to complete an objective (get everyone to a certain place, kill X number of enemies, and so on). The game takes place on a grid-based map, defined by doors and walls. Doors can be opened and closed (damaged doors can be smashed open, but there’s no way to seal a door yourself), and your marines can move, shoot, go into overwatch, defend, do a bunch of other weapon-related stuff and, er, trade (mission-specific) items with each other. Everything your marine does costs action point. Moving one square forwards will cost you an action point. Moving backwards costs you two action points. Turning costs you an action point. Special abilities like defending or going on overwatch will cost two. Then as you might expect, opening doors, shooting, unjamming your weapon and so on each cost you a point. The game is not very generous with action points either, with each of your squad each getting four points per turn each to spend. The twist then, is you get 1-6 command points per turn, which can be distributed between your squad members as you see fit to add to their pool for that turn.
