Eschalon Book III Approaches Alpha
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Basilisk Games recently revealed that it will begin alpha testing of Eschalon: Book III in August, and hopes to enter beta testing in October. Basilisk also offered some explanation to inquiring minds about the differences between alpha and beta testing. Book III is the upcoming third and final episode of the old-school fantasy RPG series.

Each developer may answer this question differently, but for our own internal usage, we define these two stages as:

ALPHA stage: The main quest is completable start to finish, but several side quests are missing. Many maps are still missing details. Some secondary NPCs are not in place yet. Testing at this stage allows us to gain feedback on things like estimated play-through time and how the testers feel about the progression of the storyline. Major bugs are often uncovered which will need patched before Beta. Some early balancing takes place during Alpha testing. Not all developers actually test the Alpha version like this, but we have found that the feedback we get in this early stage is very, very helpful and can shorten the length of time we stay in beta.

BETA stage: The game is complete and not much will change before the release date. Testing at this stage is more about catching all the last minute bugs and spelling errors. We will focus more on balancing now, making sure the game is neither too difficult nor too easy for the testers. We can usually put a solid release date in place at this time, based on the response from the beta testers.

Beware The Scamp In Elder Scrolls Online
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

ZeniMax Online Studios has posted a new preview of one of the monsters players will face in the upcoming The Elder Scrolls Online, the MMO adaptation of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls universe. The preview offers a look at the creation of art and models to bring the Scamp alive in the game, as well as a preview trailer.

Even though the Elder Scrolls setting is generally serious, we all know that there’s plenty of humor to be found. The scamp’s behaviors (especially its melodramatic death animation) can be comical, but they fit its size and attitude very well. Its abilities— like fireballs launched from its hands and raining from the sky—are intense and serious, and make it feel bigger than its voice and actions really are.

The scamp’s voice also has a little humor to it. Several of the monsters in ESO speak their own special languages that aren’t comprehensible to the player. Every now and then, you’ll hear the scamp gibbering away crazily in its own little language, which is known to get a laugh or two when noticed. Be careful, though! The scamp is still dangerous, and you may find yourself locked in a deadly, fiery battle if you spend too long giggling.

Control Command Escape Reviews Civ V: Brave New World
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Control Command Escape has posted a new review of Aspyr Media's Civilization V: Brave New World. The second expansion pack for Civilization V introduces international trade and a renewed focus on culture and diplomacy in addition to nine new civilizations, eight new wonders, two new scenarios, four new gameplay systems and dozens of new units, buildings and improvements.

Even more fun is the new Archeologist unit which can excavate former battle sites for artifacts to generate Culture in your museums. Every time I sent an Archeologist into a rival’s territory to return with an artifact I found myself saying “This belongs in a museum!” á la Indiana Jones. The archeologist, together with great artists, musicians and writers, who are generated by your cities in the same way as generals and engineers, can create great works to hang in your museums and chapels. These generate your Tourism which, unlike Faith points, cannot be spent on new units, but instead spreads to your neighboring civilisations. If your Tourism outclasses a rival then you can become the Dominant culture in their civ; once you’re the Dominant culture in all civs then that activates a Culture victory. Having Open Borders treaties and extensive trade networks also help spread your Culture around the globe. You only really need to aggressively pursue these great works if you’re after a Cultural victory but it’s worth generating Tourism to defend against your neighbors efforts. Either way it’s fun to play curator with the great works, trading them with enemy empires and switching them around museums and churches to create a collection of masterworks and harvest the most Culture points.
