Drox Operative: Invasion Of The Ancients Announced
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Soldak Entertainment has announced Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients, the upcoming first expansion for its starship action RPG. Scheduled for a release in the third quarter of this year, the add-on will focus on a galactic invasion by the older races known as Ancients. Players will have to defend both the Drox Operative Guild and the younger races in the galaxy from the sinister threat.

Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients, the first expansion for Drox Operative, is almost here! Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Mac.

Before the Drox ruled the galaxy, before they were even sentient, there were older races now known as the Ancients. Using their Operatives, the Drox crushed and enslaved most of these races. The rest fled known space. When the Drox turned on their own Operatives, the Drox were utterly destroyed. Newer races emerged and thrived in the power void, never knowing the menace waited. Seizing their chance, the Ancients are invading to take their rightful place in the galaxy, as rulers! Thirsting for revenge, the Ancients can't harm the extinct Drox, but they can crush the next best thing, the Drox Operatives.

The Ancient enemies are back! Can you defend the Drox Operative Guild and younger races against the Invasion of the Ancients?

More information about the expansion will be released later this year.

A Vertical Slice Of Project Eternity
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Obsidian Entertainment has released another new early development blog post focusing on the creation of its upcoming Project Eternity RPG. The post reveals the "Vertical Slice" phase of the game's design, and offers a piece of dungeon concept art that will look very familiar to fans of Infinity Engine games like the Baldur's Gate series.

This month we are knee-deep in the Vertical Slice phase and this will be the team's focus for the month of June. It's our way of proving that we are ready to jump forward into production and start making shippable content.

The Vertical Slice is just that, a cross section (think of it as a slice of bread cut out from the middle of a loaf) of the world of Project Eternity. At the end of this phase the game will be feature complete, and the content building portion of the team, including area designers, environment artists, and character artists can make shippable content now. Our Vertical Slice is eleven maps large; encompassing our village and dungeon from Prototype 2, and the dungeon and wilderness area from Prototype 1 (we call this area "The Valley of Hector" internally). The content from the prototypes are refactored to fit within the context of the world and overall story of the game. Feature-wise, we are targeting to have the majority of the world building tools complete and all of the character classes playable up to level five.

PopCap Games has announced that the long awaited sequel to its popular Plants vs. Zombies casual tower defense game will be released on July 18th exclusively as a free-to-play title for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Although it is likely the title will eventually makes its way to other platforms, including Macs, PopCap's launch announcement will undoubtedly leave some fans of the series disappointed.

Designed from the ground up as a live service, the ever-expanding universe of Plants vs. Zombies 2 continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future. New worlds with new levels, plants, zombies and new ways to play will be released on an ongoing basis. Leveraging the touch interface of Apple's popular mobile devices, Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to "break the fourth wall" and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses.

Also returning for the sequel is Crazy Dave, the addled neighbor who serves as a guide for players and shopkeeper for special plant upgrades and other tools and weapons. New touch-screen power-ups, plant food that supercharges plants, and novel new game mechanics that both help and hinder players' efforts to thwart the zombie hordes will enthrall existing fans and new players alike.

Free to download, Plants vs. Zombies 2 will expand and extend the classic gameplay of the original and provide players with dozens of all-new levels, plants and zombies across multiple worlds at no cost. While the vast majority of the game will be entirely free to play (players can face every zombie and access every level in every world at no cost), Plants vs. Zombies 2 players will also be able to purchase upgrades and other in-game items.

"It's about time!" said Allen Murray, Senior Producer for Plants vs. Zombies 2. "We're confident that players will see the love and attention we've put into this game. We've created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we're still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch."

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs Delayed Until Late Summer
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

In a new forum post Frictional Games revealed a delay in the release of Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, the upcoming first person horror title in development at thechineseroom. Although not a direct sequel to Frictional's original game, the first person horror title exists in the same universe and takes place on New Year's Day 1899, in London. It is now scheduled for release in late summer.

We are working away as fast as we can, it has to take the time it takes. We have no rush and as a certain well known game developer said "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.".

We are optimizing, tweaking and in general putting the FG expertise to good use. TCR keeps putting in work as well. There are companies working on the translations (will launch with 9 languages in addition to original English). The porting guys are porting away. Deals are being made. Things are prepared for launching the game through more online stores than any other FG game before. In general occupied with all things related.

We know we will not make Q2, we also know when the game will be ready for launch. We have not set the exact day yet. You can however make good use of the weather outside this summer and look forward to gaming with the piggies as the summer comes to an end.

Anomaly 2 Comes To MGS
6:00 AM | IMG News | Comment on this story

Mac Game Store has added 11 bit studios' Anomaly 2 to its list of game titles available for download and purchase. The sequel to Anomaly Warzone Earth features multiplayer action, a new single player campaign, and more than a million tactical combinations for squad building.

Anomaly 2 is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Anomaly Warzone Earth. Maintaining the core elements of the original, Anomaly 2 adds new features to the single-player campaign and finally puts your skills to a test in a completely unique experience: the dynamic tower defense vs. tower offense multiplayer mode!

In the years following the invasion of Earth in 2018, the planet is overrun by alien machines. Humankind is on the verge of extinction. Banded together in huge convoys, they search the frozen tundra for food and supplies. Since the war, the roles have been reversed: now our species seems to be the Anomaly on a machine-controlled planet. Your convoy, Commander, is called Yukon.

  • Anomaly 2 takes the RTS tower-offense concept from Anomaly Warzone Earth to a new level. The core elements of the original – tactical planning and the on-field Commander to support troops in combat – are spiced up by a number of important new features:
  • Morph your troops into war mechs to discover the new face of strategy: each unit has a different mech form with various abilities to help you overcome specific combat situations.
  • Engage in a multiplayer experience unique to Anomaly 2: tower defense vs. tower offense. Play as the towers and destroy the humans or lead the humans to annihilate the alien towers.
  • Fight across a post-apocalyptic world in a new single-player campaign that offers a more intense strategy experience than the acclaimed original.
  • Carve your own path to victory and create your ultimate battle squad. With over million tactical combinations to build your squad, your options in combat are nearly endless.
  • Dive into a beautifully rendered world, thanks to the team’s upgraded and improved visual engine.
  • Experience alternative endings dependent upon your approach to enemy machines in the campaign.
  • Mac OS X 10.6 or later

Smudged Cat Games has announced July 16th as the release date for the Mac version of Gateways. The retro 2D platformer gives players the chance to explore a large lab filled with mysterious puzzles. To succeed they will need to master the gateway gun, a device which can allow them to leap from place to place, change size, and even defy gravity.

Grab the gateway guns and explore a huge lab filled with mysterious puzzles in this classic platforming adventure. Use gateway technology to leap from one place to another, change size to explore small passages or defeat large enemies, walk on walls and ceilings to reach new areas and even travel in time to work together with past echoes of yourself.

The world warping, gravity defying, time travelling 2D puzzle platformer Gateways will be making its way onto MacOS on July 16th. Finally, Macintosh users will be able to enjoy the game that was one of the winners of Dream Build Play, Edge rated 8/10 and Game Informer listed as one of their top 50 games of 2012, rating it 9/10.

Mac Gamer HQ Reviews LEGO Lord Of The Rings
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Mac Gamer HQ has posted a new review of Feral Interactive's LEGO The Lord of the Rings. Developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for consoles, handhelds and PC, LEGO The Lord of the Rings brings the unique brick-based humor of the LEGO games to the legendary world of Middle-earth.

As you move around Middle Earth you collect Gold, Silver or Blue coins. These will allow you to buy extra characters and upgrades. You can also collect Mithril blocks which you can use at the Blacksmiths to create better weapons. These can be found as you move around the map or sometimes as part of a side quest system. These quests can range from a race through checkpoints to killing a number of creatures in a certain .

These mini quests give you a break from the main storyline and add more hours of fun. You can also use Lego bricks lying around to build structures to help you move through the world which adds depth to the gameplay.

As you play along, pop up instructions will appear over certain points, which are a big help at first but can soon make things a little too easy. In between levels are the Open World Spaces where characters can move around freely and collect special items and mini quests.
