Shattered Haven Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

Arcen Games has announced the release of Shattered Haven. The new 2D action adventure horror title challenges players to solve environmental puzzles in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by Grays, an "unusual and powerful type of living dead that doesn't rely on infection to spread its numbers." The game features nearly 100 levels, multiple difficulty levels, a level editor, and local 2-player co-op.

Grays roam the land, largely in the absence of human interference. These aren't your typical Zed -- theirs is a very different sort of apocalypse. Animals spontaneously transform into twisted, violent beings. The earth decays, collapsing into a network of abysses. The wilderness thickens.

It has been nine years since That Day when it all started. Pockets of humanity still exist, but are ignorant of one another. Within these isolated havens people try to live as best they can -- for even in a world so broken and dark, daily life must go on.

Darrell and Mary Williams were able to build such a life inside a five-acre fenced yard out in the country. They were even secure enough in their isolated compound that they had a daughter five years after the zombie-like grays appeared.

Life carried on as normally as it could, until another refugee on the run is killed during a nearby attack. Her son is saved and taken in by the Williamses -- who do not realize that this kind action will destroy their home and threaten their entire family. They find themselves caught in the midst of a struggle between two eldritch horrors, and the path to survival is anything but clear.

  • Solve environmental puzzles under pressure. Figure out how to use the tools, traps, and weapons in each level to clear all the Grays.
  • Nearly 100 hand-crafted levels with multiple difficulty levels ranging between casual and hardcore, developed end to end by two experienced adventure level designers.
  • Complete bonus objectives for higher scores and gold markers.
  • Follow the story of Darrell and Mary as they try to save their family from a new and unexpected threat through in-game storytelling and painted-style cutscenes.
  • Guide different members of the Williams family through branching story paths that result in one of several endings. Depending on your actions, the story may end very poorly, happily, or anywhere in between.
  • Music and sound by composer Pablo Vega provides a chilling atmosphere for players to experience.
  • Included level editor: The same editor used to make the main adventure will let you make your own levels, cutscenes, or even entire adventures.
  • Local 2-player co-op. Using two gamepads, two players on the keyboard, or any combination of the above.

Power Jam: Roller Derby Kickstarter Begins
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Iglu Media and BillyGoat Entertainment have launched a new Kickstarter funding campaign to create Power Jam: Roller Derby, a multi-platform video game "aiming to bring the hugely popular full-contact sport of roller derby to gamers across the globe." The Kickstarter target for Power Jam: Roller Derby is £75,000. The campaign ends on April 15.

‘Power Jam: Roller Derby’ embodies the dedication and athleticism of what is tipped as the fastest-growing amateur women’s sport in the world. Taking off in it’s current incarnation in Texas, USA in 2001 there are now over 1200 derby leagues across the globe from the USA to Egypt to the UK to Sweden, and with more leagues popping up every month, including recent developments in men’s and junior leagues, the sport is only just getting started in taking the world by storm.

William Barr, Director of BillyGoat Entertainment, is extremely passionate about the sport and has a clear vision of a game that will appeal to the derby and gaming worlds alike: "Roller derby is unique, I can't think of another full contact sport started and played in the majority by women. We want to create a game that does the sport justice, as well as helping to introduce roller derby to a wider audience by being highly attractive and accessible to gamers who’ve never heard of it before."

‘Power Jam: Roller Derby’ is part real-time strategy, part management game based on the most recent incarnation of the sport, subscribing to rules of the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association). The ‘career mode’ will reflect all the aspects of running a derby league from training to bouting and everything in between. Players will be able to hand pick their team from a roster of pre-designed skaters, or customise skaters using the in-depth character editor.

The team behind the game have worked closely with a number of roller derby leagues to ensure an authentic representation of the sport, most notably Belfast Roller Derby4 in Northern Ireland’s capital city. Fionnuala “Dempsey Hammer” Dempsey, BRD’s head of PR, is very enthusiastic about the project: “As a gamer and a derby skater, I couldn’t be more excited about this project and I’m really looking forward to getting to play Power Jam! Jonny, Will, Gareth and the team have worked really hard with our skaters, referees, non-skating-officials, committees and board to ensure that the game accurately represents modern roller derby under WFTDA rules, and I think it will have plenty of appeal to the derby and gaming communities alike. With such an accurate, realistic and exciting project planned and the obvious costs involved, if we’re going to be successful we really need both groups to support the Kickstarter campaign to help turn this dream into reality.”

Gareth Gray, Creative Director of Iglu Media explains why the team have chosen to use this option to source the necessary funding for the video game: “Kickstarter affords small companies the opportunity to raise capital, without relinquishing control of their projects. It allows us the chance to establish a fan-base early on in development and to use that fan-base as a source of feedback which will inform the final game.”

The developers of the game are looking to the derby community of fans and players, and the gaming community as a whole, to support the Kickstarter campaign both financially and by offering further advice to ensure the gameplay is both fun and in-keeping with the sport. The campaign can be found on the Kickstarter website under the name ‘Power Jam: Roller Derby’, and includes a video showcasing the plans for the project including elements of the gameplay, character customisation, and hard-hitting action from some of Belfast Roller Derby’s recent training sessions.

With such an exciting project based on such a fast-paced, all-action sport, if the Kickstarter campaign is successful ‘Power Jam: Roller Derby’ is sure to be one of the best new games to hit the market in the coming year.

Kickstarting Strategizer: The Art Of Defense
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

A new Kickstarter campaign is under way for Titan Games's Strategizer: Art of Defense. The hybrid of real time strategy and tower defense game styles is planned for release on Mac, Windows, and Linux PCs. Having already completed two years of development on the game the developers are hoping to gather £10,000 by the April 4 deadline to complete the project.

Having crash-landed on a new planet, radar is showing hostiles inbound.
It's up to you to fortify the area....

Starting out with only a small camp, some basic weapons and not much else - you will be tasked with defending the area. Gather resources, stop enemy advances, attack enemy bases, defeat bosses, and collect new equipment along the way.

Over your journey, build bigger and better bases, defend with more advanced weapons, call in air support, super turrets, and alien technology. Research new equipment, travel to new worlds with new dangers, and earn medals for completeing missions and secondary objectives.

Strategizer is a game with HUGE depth. Even if you complete the campaign and unlock all the achievements and medals, more planets will be added over time with new levels, themes and enemies. There is a weekly tournament to compete for the high score, and plans for a multiplayer mode...

When the game begins: You will face wave upon wave of increasingly dangerous enemies, who are on a mission to destroy your base! Keep your base standing for as long as possible, while you attempt to complete your own mission.

VARIOUS MISSIONS/GAME MODES: As well as the classic "Survive against X amount of waves" game type, there will also be other game types that require you to:

  • Attack and destroy an Enemy Base
  • Stockpile a certain amount of resources to win the game
  • Defeat a huge enemy Boss.
  • Survive as long as possible / Infinite waves (for a better high score)
  • Perform unique actions for scripted levels.
  • Plus more!
There will be 6 medals to win for each level, sometimes requiring you to replay the level in a different scenario. There is a lot of depth to the Campaign mode, it will take a long time to complete the entire game
  • and even then, new planets will be added over time!

Selecting Campaign Mode will take you through the extended story of how mankind were forced to flee Earth. There are 2 factions in the story, each evolving to have their own technology.
