Using Game Controllers With Aspyr Games
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

A new post on the the Game Agent Blog offers information for players wondering how to make use of game controllers with Aspyr Media's game titles. The post includes information about which games have built-in driver support and how to resolve common problems.

The internet is a vast wealth of information. Sometimes the information we’re looking for can feel lost amongst an information overload. It’s hard to check in every possible place for answers. When questions come up fairly frequently or cause a stir in the community, we’d like to address those here so that you get access to the help and information you need.

Controllers are an important aspect of playing many games. Across companies and titles, it seems like every game has its own preference for setting up controller usage. Some require 3rd party drivers, while many games from Aspyr Media and Feral Interactive do not, with drivers built into the game.

It can be hard to keep up with which ones do and do not need drivers, so we wanted to clear the air a little by detailing which Aspyr games have built-in controller drivers and what to do if you have problems connecting your controller to a game.

Drox Operative Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

GamingLives has posted a new review of Soldak Entertainment's starship action RPG, Drox Operative. The game puts players in the role of an elite starship captain and features warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic and evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.

Soldak Entertainment have made an amazing effort to keep the universe dynamic, so I was impressed but also slightly disheartened when a few of my human quests could not be completed as either they had fixed the problems themselves, or in the instance where they wanted me to protect their colony it had been wiped out. Something you learn early on in the game is that you cannot do everything and so you find yourself checking who is the most powerful or weakest in the system quite regularly and either taking them down or rallying behind them depending on your aims for victory.

As you play, empires will spread and decline and races will declare peace, war and sign no end of treaties amongst themselves. Travelling traders will wander the stars and are vulnerable to attack, just as the expanding colony ships of the major races. Throw in randomised galaxies, a myriad of anomalies as well as the quests and Drox Operative really takes it to the next level in terms of dynamism – you literally can’t stand still or you’ll be left behind as the galaxy goes about its business.

Improving Heroes Of Newerth
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Massively has posted a new preview of upcoming features in S2 Games' multiplayer onilne battle arena title, Heroes of Newerth. Based on a demo presentation of version 3.0 (scheduled for release on January 31), the article details some of the new changes in store for the game. Heroes of Newerth allows two teams of up to five players to take on the roles of heroes as they unleash armies to destroy an enemy team's base.

Possibly the most important additions to HoN are focused on improving the new player experience. Bot matches will now be available for casual play, a huge relief to seasoned noobs like yours truly. A popular feature in the hit League of Legends, bot matches have brought a whole new community of casual players to MOBAs because facing the AI is one of the easiest and least terrifying ways to learn about the basics of classic 5v5 MOBA gameplay.

"We've completely revamped the new player experience, not only by adding bots but by making a whole new walkthrough system that teaches players how to play the game by matching them against bots," said Ryan McDaniel, Lead Content Manager for S2 Games. "The walkthrough gets people into playing HoN much faster than the old tutorial."

Upon completing the walkthrough, players will gain access to the new Learnitorium. This in-game feature acts as an archive for videos, tutorials, and Hero decks and information.

"Some of our balance designers have been working on new video series to help teach basics of MOBA gameplay, and eventually, we'll expand to more advanced tactics," says director of operations Nathan Garcia.
