Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Delayed, NPC Feature Revealed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Overhaul Games recently announced a delay for the release of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Originally planned for a September release, the revamped version of the classic fantasy RPG will now be released in November. BGEE is an updated version of Bioware's fantasy role playing game set in the Forgotten Realms. The game will feature an enhanced version of the Infinity Engine, the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack, new adventures, and new party members.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Delay:

When we first announced Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, you set fire to our servers and we were overwhelmed by the huge wave of support from the fans of the original game.

Once the fires had subsided, thousands of you posted suggestions and requests on our forums. Dozens of volunteers from all over the world helped us improve game play, squash bugs, and generally fine-tune the game. Even more came to help work on translations from English to more than 16 other languages.

Executing on our plan to make the best Baldur’s Gate possible and responding to that overwhelming feedback, we’ve added new characters, areas, and story, creating many new hours of game play. Yet the suggestions, fixes, and translations continue, and more volunteers keep joining.

After recently reviewing the game and then consulting with our partners, we've decided to ensure that Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is the best possible product on launch. Thus, we have pushed back the release date of the game. Our plan is to release in November, 2012.

The company also recently released some information about one of the new NPCs players can choose to join their team, Rasaad yn Bashir. The update takes the form of a short story about the character and several audio samples of the character's voice.

Rasaad yn Bashir:

"How fierce you are." The stranger smiled. Despite his shabby clothes and weathered skin, his teeth were as straight and white as a sultan's. He threw the pomegranate hard at Rasaad's chest. Rasaad surprised himself by catching the fruit in the cup of his palm before it could strike him. He looked up to see whether the stranger was impressed, but the man was gone. The lid of the barrel flew off, and Gamaz popped up, gasping for breath and still clutching the stranger's leather purse. He looked at Rasaad, and his eyes widened. "Behind you!"

Without turning, Rasaad threw himself forward in a somersault. As he came up to his feet, the stranger stood less than a foot in front of him. Rasaad had not seen him move. He simply appeared there, like a wizard. Rasaad stepped back. The man made no effort to grab him.

"You are quick," said the stranger. "Quick of foot and quick of wits."

Planetary Annihilation: Third Highest Funded Kickstarter
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

Uber Entertainment recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign for the upcoming real time strategy game, Planetary Annihilation. At over $2.2 million in funding the game becomes the third highest funded Kickstarter project, joining successful titles such as Double Fine Adventure and Wasteland 2. Featuring "Total Annihilation inspired" gameplay, the game developers intend to offer a new spin on the RTS genre.

Planetary Annihilation brings Real-Time Strategy to a new generation of gamers in a way they’ve never been seen before: Total Annihilation-inspired gameplay on a planetary scale.

We all know that the RTS genre has taken a hit. There just aren’t that many quality original RTS games coming out. If you love to play games like Total Annihilation your options are pretty limited. This is where Planetary Annihilation comes in. It is meant to be a truly innovative spin on what RTS games can and should be.

A Solar System Is Your Playground

Expand your empire to harness the resources of entire solar systems to create vast armies with which to annihilate enemy planets, destroy rival systems and win the Galactic War!
Pick Your Battles
Play a quick skirmish with a friend on a single planet map with a low unit cap or a 12+ hour game with 40 of your closest frenemies and thousands of units. You can also hone your skills against Planetary Annihilation’s AI or team up with a friend against multiple AI’s.
Advanced Command and Control
Planetary Annihilation’s order queuing interface allows you to control massive armies spread across multiple worlds with ease. Get strategic views of the action anywhere, anytime by zooming in and out of the war zone, and use split interfaces and multiple windows to keep an eye on multiple battlegrounds at once.
Procedural Planet Creator
Create custom or randomized maps with our procedural planet creator. Like what you see? Save them and share them with the Planetary Annihilation community.
Streaming Resource Economy
Use resources to build mega projects. Assign swarms of construction units in realtime to manage your economy. Reclaim wreckage and terrain to quickly regroup after a battle.
War Machine
Planetary Annihilation’s rendering engine is brought to you by the team that developed the rendering engines for Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. Our engine will allow you to explore vast, new procedural worlds with diverse terrain and build on everything from small, airless rocks to huge earth-type planets. No two maps are exactly alike.
Client-Server Networking Architecture
Other than Total Annihilation, which was asynchronous, most Real-Time Strategy games use a synchronous networking model, which means that all the computers in a given game are held back by the slowest machine. The Planetary Annihilation engine uses a client-server model so that the “heavy lifting” can be done on a game server, freeing up gamers’ machines to engage in bigger battles with more players!
Advanced Modding features
Create new units, gametypes, maps and planet archetypes. Run your own servers with your own sets of units and game modes.

Mac Version A Possibility For Obsidian's Project Eternity
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

In just 27 hours Obsidian Entertainment's Project Eternity Kickstarter reached its $1.1 million funding target, prompting the company to release a list of "stretch goal" funding targets for the upcoming roleplaying game. Drawing on classics of the genre such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, the game will feature character creation, a party of adventurers, tactical "real time with pause" combat, dungeon exploration, and a storyline the developers promise will be compelling.

We are excited to announce the stretch goals for Project Eternity!

1.1 million, Base Goal – Achieved!
Base game includes three races, five classes, and five companions. We have ideas for these, but we want to hear your opinions on what you'd like to see. Stay tuned to Kickstarter, our website, and our forums to join in on the conversation.

1.4 million, New Playable Race, Class, and Companion! - Achieved!
Expands your options for character creation and adds a companion of the new class.

1.6 million, a Mac Version of Project Eternity and The Story Grows!
We've listened and we’ll make a Mac version of the game at this tier. We're also going to add a new major storyline along with new quests, locations, NPCs, and unique loot (special histories everyone?).

About Project Eternity:

Obsidian Entertainment and our legendary game designers Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, and Josh Sawyer are excited to bring you a new role-playing game for the PC. Project Eternity (working title) pays homage to the great Infinity Engine games of years past: Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment.

Project Eternity aims to recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPGs that we enjoyed making - and playing. At Obsidian, we have the people responsible for many of those classic games and we want to bring those games back… and that’s why we’re here - we need your help to make it a reality!

Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system - positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you'll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.

We are excited at this chance to create something new, yet reminiscent of those great games and we want you to be a part of it as well.
