EVE Online Invite A Friend 60 Day Trial, Crucible Trailer
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

CCP Games has announced a new 60 day trial offer for players of the company's sci-fi MMO, EVE Online. The trial keys give existing players the chance to bring in a friend to try out the game for 60 days. The keys are single use items which must be redeemed by January 24. CCP has also released a new trailer showcasing additions and changes in its recently released Crucible expansion.

So, you’re saying to yourself…”that’s a neat extended trial key, but what is in it for me?” The answer is, honestly not much. Just a bigger richer EVE and a chance to give your favorite person in the world something they can’t get anywhere else. We thought we’d try an experiment and see what would happen if we gave out 60 day trial keys for EVE players to pass on. It’s that simple.

Again, Crucible is about getting EVE back to its roots, it's in-space, player driven roots. Over the years we’ve gone from a “buy now” model, to a short trial, to a longer trial method of getting new players to experience the EVE Universe. Looking back at the data and surveys over the last few years we see people wanting more and more time to get familiar with EVE. The 14 days we settled on is looking a little long in the tooth in the modern world, and honestly, EVE is just really big and players deserve more time to really get into the game.

So, grand experiment #1, give out 350K 60 day trial codes. The only way to get one is to ask an EVE player or have an EVE player ask you. We’re not looking for hordes of l337 kids with ADD We’re hoping that an extended trial to poke around in the EVE universe will give more folks the time needed to get engaged and get involved in EVE Online. And, given the crowded schedule of holidays and new releases around this time of year, we’re hoping that extended play time let’s people pickup and learn EVE at their own pace.

City Of Heroes: Making The Most Of Titan Weapons
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

NCSoft and Paragon Studios have posted a new Intrepid Informer article detailing features in its super hero themed MMO, City of Heroes. This time the Informer focuses on Titan Weapons, offering an in-depth analysis of the power set and some tips and tricks for success.

Titan Weapons introduces a new mechanic called Momentum. A Titan Weapons character gains Momentum after executing one of their Titan Weapon powers. You'll notice that your first swing (without Momentum) is quite long. Usually around 2 to 3 seconds or so. However, once you hit your foe with one of these slow attacks you'll gain Momentum. This will cause your next few Titan Weapon attacks to use different shorter animations. For the next few swings, you'll be able to rapidly deliver a ton of damage. However, once Momentum wears off your next Titan Weapon attack will use a longer animation. Momentum cannot be maintained indefinitely.

This requires a bit of practice to use efficiently. I'll talk more about efficiency below in Tips and Tricks. A bit of strategy will pay off, and you'll be able to rapidly chain several area of effect attacks off together to decimate a group of foes.

Jurassic Park: The Game Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

AnandTech has posted a new review of Telltale Games' Jurassic Park: The Game. Based on the book and movie series, the five part episodic adventure title drops players into the dangerous environs of Isla Nublar, where they will struggle to survive confrontations with dinosaurs as they seek a way to escape.

From the review:

As a canonical companion to the original film, Jurassic Park largely succeeds. You’ll see a few familiar locations, hear a few memorable quotes, and spend plenty of time with old friends like the velociraptor. You won’t, however, encounter any characters from the films (except some dinosaurs and the corpse of a greedy, near-sighted computer programmer).

Jurassic Park’s cast is a motley crew of park employees, mercenaries, and a teenager with a penchant for petty theft. Alliances shift constantly as everyone (save the innocent father/daughter pair) fights for possession of a notorious can of shaving cream. Their story – divided into four episodes – isn’t amazing, but it moves swiftly and nimbly. You also view it from a variety of angles, taking turns controlling each character. Shifting perspectives so often kept me guessing as to some of the character’s true motives, as well as which members of my party might not make it off the island.

Neverwinter Nights 2: How To Be A Successful Adventurer
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 8 comments

Aspyr Media's GameAgent Blog has been updated with a new guide for success in Neverwinter Nights 2. The RPG sequel returns players to the Forgotten Realms, this time following the adventures of an orphaned hero dealing with an evil spirit known as the King of Shadows.

Throughout your adventures in the NWN2 realms you will come across and pick up a various number of party members. These party members will help you win battles and complete quests. Balancing your party throughout the game is a crucial step to ensure all skills and abilities are covered. Having 3 bards in your party may make some quests more difficult than if you had a range of classes and abilities.

With more party members, comes greater responsibility. Now that you’ve gained some members to your party, you have the option to control them! You can give the companions full control and allow them to act on their own “free will.” Though this option allows you to focus more on other tasks, it may become troublesome when your party members are opening chests and picking locks when they should be helping you battle a hoard of lizard people. I recommend going to your party’s options page to change the AI settings so you can control your party members. Assigning your members tasks can be helpful when strategizing battle tactics.
