Gratuitous Tank Battles Video Blog Released

Positech Games has released a new video blog for the upcoming Gratuitous Tank Battles, explaining what the armored combat game is about. The upcoming new title is described as a hybrid of real time strategy and tower defense, featuring online elements, customizable units, and a built-in map editor for custom creations.

Gratuitous Tank Battles is coming to the PC and Mac, developed by Positech Games, makers of Democracy, Kudos and of course Gratuitous Space Battles. Gratuitous Tank Battles is an RTS/Tower Defense hybrid with online elements and customisable units. The player can take the role of the defender or the attacker in a series of top-down explodey battles. A built-in map editor will allow easy sharing of custom maps and defensive challenges with other GTB players in a similar fashion to GSB's challenge system.

GTB takes place in an alternate reality where the 'central powers' never surrender and the 'great war' continues for two hundred years. Soldiers still fight in the trenches of the Somme, although rifles have (mostly) become laser rifles and giant armored mechs stride across no-mans land. The two great armies continue to fight with patriotic zeal and little memory of who Franz Ferdinand was and what happened to him. One thing is certain: It will all be over by Christmas 2114.

The Sims 3 Pets Reviewed

PC Gamer has posted a new review of The Sims 3 Pets, the recently released pet based expansion for the popular Sims 3. Developed by the The Sims Studio team, and brought to Mac by TransGaming, the addition gives players the ability to play as a pet for the first time in franchise history and see The Sims world through their eyes.

From the review:

Whether furry, hairy, scaly or feathered, pets integrate seamlessly into the life simulator. They can be inserted into new families from the outset, or adopted from other Sims or the adoption agency. And, because The Sims 3: Pets fills your town to the brim with wandering strays, your Sim can also befriend vagrant woofers, taking them off the streets and showering them in mind-smearing luxury.

Gone are the pet careers of The Sims 2, replaced by more realistic functions: dogs can hunt and dig for treasure. Cats can catch vermin. Horses can be ridden in races and made to jump over things for money. Riding itself is a skill Sims can learn, while hunting and other tricks can be taught and improved. The pets themselves can be controlled exactly as you would a human Sim, allowing you to placate their immediate desires (typically: sniffing and eating things) or attend to their needs without the interaction of a human Sim. And, just as with human Sims, wish fulfilment grants rewards Ė such as the ability to vomit at will.

iodoom3 Project Begins

Ryan Gordon has announced work on the iodoom3 project, as well as the unveiling of a website, forum, mailing list, and twitter feed for the project. Like ioquake3, the goal of the effort is to perfect the source code of id Software's Doom 3 to create a streamlined open source basis for developing new games and projects, as well as "the perfect version of the game engine for playing Doom 3."

What is iodoom3?

On November 22, 2011 id Software released the source code to Doom 3. This project aims to build upon that source code release by cleaning up, fixing bugs, and adding features. Our permant goal is to create the open-source Doom 3 distribution upon which people base their games and projects. We also seek to have the perfect version of the game engine for playing Doom 3, itís expansion pack Resurrection of Evil, and all popular mods.

Does this mean that Doom 3 is free to play?

No. Playing Doom 3 still requires a legitimate copy of the game. You can purchase a copy from Steam or your favorite retailer.

Guns Of Icarus Postmortem

Game Career Guide has posted a new postmortem article from Muse Games. The article explores what went right and what went wrong with the development of Guns of Icarus. The action game puts players in the role of a privateer ferrying goods across treacherous space in a post apocalyptic steampunk future.

We started Guns of Icarus the same way we started everything else: saying, "It would be cool if..." In the case of Guns of Icarus, we thought of those moments in typical shooters where you get to briefly use the big mounted turrets, and thought that sensation could be made into a whole game itself. Guns, fire, explosions, and above all a sense of urgency and power -- just seems like the right thing to do. This dovetailed with our concept for a ruined world with large diesel-punk airships and bands of marauding air-pirates patrolling the wastes. Over a few conversations, scribbled notes, and sketches, the idea of Guns of Icarus started taking shape.

We didn't have a lot of money, and we knew that there wasn't anything else we'd rather do than make games. With a limited budget, we set a target of four months to develop the game. We were able to keep to our target, and craft a set of core gameplay mechanics that resonated well with players. We spent another month and a half testing and polishing before we put it up on our site. We envisioned a lot more for the game, but our budgetary constraints enforced discipline and a small scope. We just had to start somewhere and see where it takes us.
