Tropico 3: Gold Edition Coming To Macs In January
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 6 comments

Feral Interactive today announced that Tropico 3: Gold Edition for the Mac will be released this January, 2012. Developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media for Windows, Tropico 3: Gold Edition is a re-imagining of the classic construction and management simulation Tropico.

“Tropico 3: Gold Edition combines strategic gameplay with a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of a tumultuous period of world history,” said David Stephen, Managing Director of Feral Interactive. “When you’re the corrupt dictator of an unpredictable tropical paradise, stuff happens.”

“Tropico 3 was a fantastic success on Windows,” said Simon Hellwig, Managing Director of Kalypso Media. “We’re thrilled to have the game and its expansion pack be released on the Mac as well.”

Tropico 3: Gold Edition is a combination of strategic city-builder and humorous political simulator that invites players to reign as El Presidente, dictator of the resource-rich Caribbean nation of Tropico. To govern is to choose, and as players build their island’s infrastructure, manage the economy and keep competing factions on side, they will have plenty of opportunity to find out whether they prefer to rule with a velvet glove or an iron fist.

To maintain their grip on power, players will need to create a cult of personality around El Presidente, composing his silver-tongued speeches, manipulating the media and building monuments in his honor. El Presidente’s character will determine the way he is regarded by the people, and whether he is inclined to run Tropico as a vacation paradise, a police state, an industrial metropolis, or all three!

Each of the 15 missions in Tropico 3: Gold Edition’s campaign mode challenges players to develop a single island, each with its own victory conditions, within a set time frame. Tropico 3: Gold Edition includes the Absolute Power expansion pack, which contains a completely new 10-mission campaign, additional islands and the ability to issue “Megalomania” edicts such as “Print Money”.

Rimelands: Hammer of Thor Demo Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Dicework Games has released a demo version of its upcoming action RPG, Rimelands: Hammer of Thor. Originally released for iPhone, the game will soon be available for Mac and Windows PCs as well. The new version is an enhanced and "largely remade" version of the iOS release.

Rimelands: Hammer of Thor -
For a thousand years mankind was forced to dwell underground like cockroaches. The cold wrath of the Earth was simply unbearable, even with the marvels of our advanced technology. So we hid. We hid and we waited. Just as the darkness and the pressure of the life under the massive sheets of ice became insufferable, we discovered something entirely new.

Steam, we called it. Obviously it was a simple name which did no justice to the unimaginable properties of the substance. But the name was irrelevant, since it was the breakthrough that enabled us to triumph once more. For the first time after the Overwinter Vaults were built, they could be expanded.

Asgard, the largest and most prosperous of the vaults led this advance. Along with two other vaults it soon formed the Triumvirate. The first real nation after the beginning of the ice age, it was heralded. The Golden Age of Darkness, as it is now known, lasted for centuries, ending at the new ascension of the mankind.

The world we entered was not the world we had left all that time ago. It was inhabited by a new breed — or rather a really old one — which we came to call the Fair Folk, or the Faerie. We did not come in peace, as is the way of our kind — but conquered. But we were outnumbered and weak, even with our Steam engines and advanced machinery. It soon became clear that the war would only lead to demise of both man and Faerie. A pact was formed.

The Exalted Chamber, with members from both peoples, was formed to oversee the new society. They would ensure that no harm would befall unto us nor them. And peace reigned again. The repopulation has begun.

The current era has lasted for some decades now, and the signs of peril loom upon us again. There are factions working in the dark, seeking to overthrow the Chamber. A race for the artifacts of the past civilizations has begun. Items of untold power lay hidden deep in the dead Vaults, many of which are yet to be found. Should an artifact of remarkable power be unearthed, it could throw the world into a new turmoil.

Here’s how the new version differs from the iOS original:

  • Completely redesigned GUI and controls suitable for a desktop game
  • Rewritten story, including new cutscenes, completely new dialogue and, well, better writing in all.
  • New visual effects that take advantage of PC hardware
  • Updated and new levels
  • Better balancing, options for players seeking more challenge out of the game

The Music Of Toki Tori 2
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Two Tribes has posted a new blog about development of Toki Tori 2, the sequel to their original puzzle platformer. The post focuses on the game's music, offering some insight into the team working on the game's audio elements as well as plans for adaptive music.

As the game concept of TT2 will be quite different and deeper compared to TT1, we’re looking for new ways to incorporate music and sound within the total gaming experience. Plans now are to implement a form of adaptation in the music, i.e. to have changing melodies, sounds, and rhythms as Toki makes his way through the levels. There are different possibilities to finish a level, and it could be interesting to have these possibilities reflect in sound as well. You could also think of changing music and sounds as a result of the interaction of Toki with the different characters in the game.
