The Broken Hourglass Development Abandoned
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 4 comments

Planewalker Games has officially abandoned development of the fantasy RPG, The Broken Hourglass. The game code and materials created for the now defunct title may be released as open source content at some future date. The Broken Hourglass would have offered a new CRPG engine, a 2D isometric viewpoint, and a mod friendly design.

Planewalker Games LLC is formally abandoning development of The Broken Hourglass as a commercial product. I have concluded that it is infeasible for PWG to deliver the game promised, and unacceptable to try to market a product that would not meet expectations. I take full responsibility for this decision and the factors leading to the conclusion.

It is my intention to release the game materials for TBH and the underlying WeiNGINE game code in some open source/open content license model which will permit the ongoing exploration and development of the game as a non-commercial, community project. The exact licenses and scope of this public release have not yet been determined, and there is no specific timetable for this public release to happen. The intention will be to give the greater community the best chance possible to explore the potential of TBH and to honor the efforts of the dozens of people who have been involved with TBH's development over the years.

Support from RPG players and press has been overwhelmingly positive and constant during the long development cycle of TBH and I am extremely grateful. It remains to be seen if PWG will attempt a commercial project of more manageable scope in the future. Until that day, please accept my apologies for coming short of the mark, and my thanks for your interest.

Silverlode Announces Warspire MMORTS
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Silverlode Interactive has announced Warspire, the follow-up to its flagship MMORTS, SAGA. Warspire is a collectible fantasy RTS featuring head-to-head realtime strategy action with units and heroes available from all six factions in the SAGA universe.

“With SAGA, the focus is on nation-building and completing quests,” stated Silverlode president Jason Faller. “We wanted the follow-up to be centered on players competing against one another in an intense strategy setting while maintaining the persistency that made SAGA such an innovative game.”

In keeping with this persistency theme, players can select heroes for their army which can level up, gaining greater power and new abilities. This progress is maintained from match to match. In addition, players can purchase new troops with in-game or real life currency to bolster the forces of their armies. This dynamic will allow Warspire to be released free to play.

Silverlode is developing Warspire for release on Macintosh, Windows and Linux platforms. An invitational, limited Alpha is slated for release before Fall.
