Heroes Of Newerth First Anniversary Celebrations Begin
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

In honor of the one year anniversary of Heroes of Newerth's release, independent game developer S2 Games has announced the launch of a "HoNiversary" celebration. Featured elements of the celebration include an eleven day Free-to-Play session, free goblin coins for all players, item shop changes and a revamped set of tool tips. The HoNiversary celebration runs through Sunday, May 22 at 12 a.m. EST.

“The HoN community has been instrumental in the success of the game, helping us to make tremendous strides since last year’s launch,” said S2 Games CEO and co-founder Marc DeForest. “In just the last month, our players enjoyed over 650 million minutes of HoN! We have an average of 30,000 people playing at any given time and daily concurrent peaks of over 50,000 players. We’re looking forward to increasing these numbers by continuing to add game updates and reward systems like the HoNiversary F2P session that keep existing players engaged, and encourage new players to join.”

The F2P session allows new players to sign up for a free HoN account so they can familiarize themselves with the session-based, multiplayer, action-RPG at no cost. Players can purchase a specific coin package during the HoNiversary event and receive a free account that they can use for themselves or pass along to a friend. Additionally, all players will be rewarded 100 Gold Goblin Coins and 100 Silver Coins for their first completed game during the course of the F2P week.

As part of the HoNiversary celebration, S2 Games is also delivering a game patch that will increase customization for current HoN fans and make the game more accessible for new players. The update, which goes live tonight at 9:00 p.m. EST, features:
  • An entirely redesigned item shop that not only reduces the amount of time new players need to learn the intricacies of item purchases, but also adds a layer of clarification for existing players. New elements include search functionality, a revamped purchasing interface, item progression panel and dual modes.
  • Fully interactive hero guides that can be customized and ultimately let users quickly purchase items and level up according to the guide. The guides are ranked by the community and give players the ability to set default preferences for recommended items.
  • A completely new set of simple tooltips designed to make the game more accessible for new players, along with a rewritten set of advanced tooltips for increased clarity, consistency, and usability for current players.
  • Two new highly requested avatars Winston Charmadon and Thor Thunderbringer.

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

Nival has announced it is bringing Prime World to North America and Europe. Prime World combines elements of social and strategy games, challenging players to engage in both competitive PvP battles and collaborative castle-building sessions. The game is cross-platform, with features available on Facebook, Mac, and Windows PC as well as iOS and Android-enabled platforms.

"Prime World lets gamers kick their friend's ass while getting their girlfriend something pretty for her castle," said Nival founder and president Sergey Orlovskiy. "Prime World combines two parts together - competitive PvP battle sessions with a collaborative castle-building game - to make a truly innovative game."

Prime World is a full-scale downloadable game with a meaningful cross-platform, social experience. Players will face off in intense, player-versus-player fighting and will also build their castles and enjoy social gaming features through a web browser and mobile devices, enabled with Android or iOS as the castle-building gameplay is developed on the Unity 3D engine.

Key features in Prime World include:

  • PvP Action - Knock out the opposition in different session-based battles, including a mode inspired by popular DotA mechanics
  • Heroes Management - Customize individual hero's talents to build a unique army to take into battle and trade valuable talents with other players
  • Terraforming - Gain advantages in the PvP battles with terraforming, an impressive visual effect that occurs when one team plants its flag to capture various control points located throughout the map
  • Mini Game - Conquer a fast-paced, action-puzzle game to provide valuable support to fellow warriors
  • Extraordinary Style and Setting - Enjoy the vibrant art style of Prime World, which is set in a new, creative universe
  • "Prime World binds Nival's love of strategy games with real social dynamics," said David D Christensen, general manager for Nival's North American operations. "We look forward to showcasing its groundbreaking features at E3 to highlight the game's varied features and challenging strategic gameplay experience."
Nival will unveil Prime World for the first time in North America at the the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2011, June 7-9 at booth No. 4022 in the West Hall. Game stations will offer attendees a chance to play the game, meet Nival developers and obtain exciting Prime World-themed items

Prime World has been in development for three years with more than 100 employees working on the title. Gamers will be able to download and play Prime World for free and can choose to purchase in-game items. Nival plans to run a public beta test later this year.

Hector: Badge Of Carnage Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Appletell has posted a new review of the first episode of Telltale Games' Hector: Badge of Carnage. The game follows the exploits of Detective Inspector Hector's adventures in Clapper's Wreake during a hostage crisis. Appletell gave the game a score of 4 out of 5.

From the review:

The title character is a drunken slob who consorts with prostitutes and wakes up in a jail cell he uses as a home. He’s also a Detective Inspector for the town of Clappers Wreake, which could politely be called the Bad Part of Hell. When a sniper takes hostages in episode one of the series—We Negotiate With Terrorists—Hector decides the best way to handle the situation is to simply give in to his demands. Thus begins the first episode, as our “hero” wanders around the city, doing the right thing only because a maniac with a gun told him to.

The game uses a simple point and click interface; you talk to various characters, pick up objects, and use or combine them to overcome obstacles. The puzzles require some old school “lateral” (that is, insane) thinking, and virtually nothing you’ll find can be used for its intended purpose. This makes the puzzles fairly challenging, but the character dialogue can help you out—they’ll tell you what you need, but not how to find it. If all else fails, the in-game hint system will give you clues (while berating your intelligence). And if that doesn’t work, there’s an in-game walkthrough that I had to consult a couple of times when the whacked-out logic of the game took a turn for the especially bizarre.
