Soldak Offers Early Look At Sci-Fi Action RPG
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

Expanding upon some earlier hints about the nature of Soldak Entertainment's next game title, Steven Peeler has posted a new blog post offering more details about the game. Described as "Master of Orion from a mercenary captain's point of view," the game will place players in a dynamic galaxy and give them to the chance to build their fortune and influence the balance of power between opposing races.

In each game you start in a random galaxy with several races. Each race's goal is to conquer the galaxy, the problem is the other races are in the way. This is the plot of many strategy games like Master of Orion or Civilization (well Civ is planet bound).

These races expand their territory by scouting out and colonizing suitable planets. They build up their planets with more and better buildings that enhance their economy. They go to war and attack enemy races to hurt them or take their planets. They do much of this by building fleets of starships. They also research new and better technology to build better buildings and ships.

You aren't in control of any of this, directly at least. You are a mercenary in this very dynamic galaxy. Your job is really to survive and make a good living in the meantime. You can pick the side that you feel is right and help them conquer the galaxy for its own good. You can pick the side that you think is going to win and go along for the ride. You can even try to play the races against each other and simply try to pick the winning side at the last second.
As noted in the blog the new game is at a very early stage of development and may change significantly before release. Read more at the link below.

Jeff Vogel Responds To Avadon Detractors
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

In a new post on his Bottom Feeder blog Spiderweb Software's Jeff Vogel responded to some negative feedback to the recently released Windows version of the company's latest RPG, Avadon: The Black Fortress. The first chapter of a new saga, the game puts players in the role of a spy and warrior tasked to defend the homeland from its many enemies.

We finally released Avadon: The Black Fortress for Windows. So far, it is functional and selling very well. I am really heartened to the reaction to the game. It is doing way better than I thought it would, and it's doing me a world of good to know that a game I put so much heart into doesn't appear to suck.

Because my morale is so high, I am going to do something I almost never do. I am going to go to a forum full of people who hate my games, my writing, and the mere fact that I still draw oxygen on this planet. Namely, the Avadon thread on RPG Codex.
