Machinarium Developer Announces Three New Projects

In a recent blog post Amanita Design, creator of the Machinarium adventure game, recently announced three new projects. The first is an intaractive music video called Osada, the second is a new point-and-click adventure titled Botanicula, and the third is Samoros 3, a new full length adventure game in development.

The first and almost finished one is Osada, itís an interactive music video created by our animator VŠclav BlŪn and music composer äimon Ornest. This weird experience made in Flash will be available for free on our website very soon.

The second project is point-and-click adventure game Botanicula about five tree creatures on a quest to save their homeís last seed from a pack of evil parasites. The game is being developed by our second animator JŠra Plachż and it will feature music and sounds from Czech band Dva. Itís currently halfway through development, with release planned for the end of the year or early in 2012.

And the third game is Samorost3 on which we just started to work as our studio main project. After Machinarium, this should be our second full-length game. More info about the development will be presented on this blog in upcoming months so stay tuned:)

Steven Peeler Discusses Indie RPG Creation
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story has posted a new interview with Soldak Entertainment's Steven Peeler. The indie RPG maker discussed Din's Curse and its expansion Demon War, adding random elements to games, and the need to give players a sense of urgency to complete mission objectives.

Itís a cliche in RPG plotlines that time is always of the essence: the player must act soon, or all will be lost! Except that it really wonít. The player can dawdle, fight wolves over and over, talk to every NPC in every town in the kingdom, perform every fetch quest, and just generally do nothing while the antagonist waits patiently for the player to get on with it. In opting for intensity and timed goals, are you trying to turn this dynamic on its head? Or is that just a pleasant side effect of your approach?

Yes, this is definitely one of the things that we have purposely changed in Dinís Curse and Depths of Peril. In most games when an NPC says solve this quest quick or we will all die, it really means nothing and the player knows it. There isnít any emotional impact when everyone is 100% sure that the threat is a bluff. Well in DC and DoP there are no bluffs. When an NPC tells the player that an Orc uprising is planning on attacking the town, thatís really what he means. If nothing is done to stop them they will eventually attack the town and at least attempt to kill everyone. Once players realize that the threats are real, they feel actual pressure to stop that Orc uprising in time. Well that or they will feel the intensity of trying to quell an Orc town attack before everyone dies.

Dragon Age II Reviewed

Mac|Life has posted a new review of Dragon Age 2. Brought to Macs by TransGaming using the company's Cider Portability Engine, the game puts players in the role of Hawke and allows them to craft the story of the legend's rise to power. Mac|Life gave the game a score of 4.5 out of 5.

From the review:

Like its predecessor, Dragon Age II swings for the fences to be the king of the role-playing genre. And once again, it succeeds. Amazing graphics and sound meet top-notch voice acting while presenting a world that's completely immersive and makes you an active part of the storyline with every choice you make. Looking to help a given side in a dispute? Prepare to reap the consequences and alliances are made, broken, mended and tested with every dialogue choice you make. Like any good role-playing game, Dragon Age II allows you to build the character of Hawke from the ground up, your first choices being Hawke's gender as well as character type (warrior, rogue or mage).

Where a fair number of role-playing titles put a huge amount of focus on specifying your party's upgrades after a new level has been gained, Dragon Age II finds an easier way to do this. You're tasked with choosing Hawke's next upgrades, and can also choose whether to upgrade everyone else in the party individually or use an Auto Level-Up option to make the best choices for upgrades.

Diablo III: Game Balance, Combat Mechanics, Using Runes

In recent posts on the Diablo III forums community manager Bashiok revealed new information about the upcoming action RPG. This time the discussion covered a variety of topics including PvP and PvE balance, combat and rune mechanics, and Diablo III's development status.

The development process is such that there's a constant iteration on all parts, so while skills are largely complete there's still work being done that could mean some are removed or replaced, new ones added, visuals changed, mechanic changes, etc. and that will likely continue until the game releases. By the same token you could say an Act is playable from start to finish, but by no stretch would we consider it complete until we ship the game. Constant changes will occur until then to make sure it's as close to perfect as possible. The majority of the guys and gals, I'd say, are progressing on filling out the content for the game. Which is also the exact stuff we want to be kept under wraps, and thus will never be seen until the game is released and you play the game yourself for the very first time. Which makes talking about what's currently being developed kind of difficult. We have a few things left in store to share, though.
