Din's Curse Updated

Soldak Entertainment has released version 1.006 of its action RPG, Din's Curse. The new version includes several bug fixes and improvements.

In Din's Curse players take the role of an adventurer cursed to walk the lands in a quest for redemption. The game features 141 possible class combinations, an infinite number of dynamically generated towns, and a game world directly impacted by player choices.

Changes in version 1.006:

  • moved combustion2.tga & blueRing01.tga from expansion to base game (Archon)
  • added a note in the manual about AppData being hidden by default (Hagaar)
  • now use smaller font for mouse wheel function & keyboard layout so text fits (Ghoulgoat)
  • added command to test all effects for missing textures
  • fixed priest skill hit effect
  • fixed a couple more effects

New Portal 2 Videos Showcase Gameplay

Valve Software has published two new trailers from its upcoming first person action puzzler, Portal 2. The videos showcase the leaps possible using the game's Faith Plates and the usefulnesss of the Portal 2's Repulsion Gel.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Hands-On Preview

IGN has posted a new preview of Blizzard Entertainment's Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft. Cataclysm will allow players to adventure as two new playable races, bring their characters to level 85, take on challenging quests and dungeons in all-new zones, and experience dramatic changes to familiar aspects of the game in the wake of a world-shattering disaster.

Combat zones have not only been improved by re-arranging enemy placement, but the battles themselves have become more exciting. When I zapped a large jungle cat in Cataclysm, the feline leaped 20 feet to my location and swiped my character turned red and blood splurted out of my Shaman's sides. Whoa.

In fact, all of the spells or special attacks that enemies inflict upon you make much more of a splash than before, which is great to see. The spell Shrink actually turned my character Hawkzors into something straight out of the movie, "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" and she ran around like a fairy on cocaine until it wore off. When water elementals attacked me with a tidal wave spell, an actual wave rose up and hurled toward my character, unleashing its devastating momentum on the poor Shaman. These are just a few examples, but it's nice to see that Blizzard made an effort to re-vamp the attack animations to make battles more visually entertaining.

StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty Reviewed

Gaming Nexus has posted a new review of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty from Blizzard Entertainment. The real-time strategy game continues the story of the Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss with an expanded single player campaign, and features all new units and strategies for multiplayer fans to explore. Gaming Nexus gave SC II a letter grade of A.

The first of a trilogy of titles, Wings of Liberty chooses to focus almost exclusively on the Terran forces for their single-player campaign. The plot propelling the game along isn't anything amazing, but the actual storytelling is top-notch. Picking up four years after the Brood Wars, the Terrans have managed to settle into an uneasy calm. The Zerg have remained silent all the while, and the Protoss have likewise kept to themselves. Jim Reynor, hero of the previous title, finds himself hunted by the government of the recently-crowned Arcturus Mengsk. Of course, nothing remains quiet for long, and soon Reynor finds himself pitted against old enemies and aided by loyal friends. The campaign itself is laid out beautifully, with a wonderful assortment of well-balanced missions. Borrowing heavily from some other current RTS favorites, the campaign features a branching mission structure, with between-mission downtime available to purchase upgrades to troops and technologies. There are even a few either/or points in the campaign, which when coupled with a slew of Achievement goals, make for quite a bit of replayability in the single-player campaign alone.

The missions themselves feature a great mix, from typical "destroy the enemy" to hero-centric RPG-lite outings. Almost every mission introduces a new Terran unit type, or at least stresses a specific strategy--in essence, the single-player campaign is a training regimen for the multiplayer arena. But even for those, like myself, that don't typically enjoy the frantic multiplayer battles, the single-player missions are a blast.
