Apple Games Features The Chronicles Of Riddick
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Apple Games' latest feature takes readers to the shadowy side of the universe for a tour of the recent Virtual Programming Mac release of The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The game features Riddick in two adventures: the Assault on Dark Athena campaign and an enhanced version of the original Escape from Butcher Bay. Apple's article includes an overview of the game, a look at the character's history, an exploration of multiplayer modes, a list of weapons found in the game, and a collection of cheat codes.

In addition to characters willing to lend him a hand, Riddick also comes across various useful objects: UD money, which can be traded for weapons, packs of smokes, or other items; drugs, another form of currency in Butcher Bay; NanoMED cartridges, which let you recharge spent NanoMED stations and recover some lost health from them; vent tools for gaining access to air ducts; and bounty cards. The bounty cards and packs of smokes unlock special in-game collectibles, including concept art from the game and the movies, movie sets and props, and more.

While Riddick gets a few opportunities to use weapons during his adventures, he relies mostly on his physical abilities to survive. Crouch to activate Riddick’s stealth mode, which lets you remain hidden in the shadows; it’s the best method for sneaking up behind an enemy and killing them without raising a ruckus and alerting others nearby. Riddick can also shimmy across ledges and move along hang rails; if he needs to, he can drop onto an enemy from a great height, killing them while breaking his fall.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Mac Beta Coming Soon
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

Shacknews recently revealed that Blizzard Entertainment's next next beta patch for the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty client will pave the way for the release of a Mac version of the beta. The update will also include the Galaxy Editor, giving testers the chance to explore the toolset. SC II will pick up a few years after the end of Broodwar and will follow the story of the Terrans.

Yesterday, Blizzard revealed that the next beta patch should be launching this week along with the much-anticipated Galaxy Editor, which will allow gamers to create their own maps and script their own scenarios.

At best, the patch could hit today along with another database reset, but should be released by the end of this week according to lead producer Chris Sigaty.
The editor will not allow users to publish creations to the 2.0 cloud, which is planned for the retail release of the game, but it will give players an opportunity to learn the scripting engine and get to work on their creations. Eventually (a year after release) map-makers will be able to sell their creations on the Marketplace.

Additionally, the Mac beta client will be made available 3-4 days following the patch.

Phenomic and Electronic Arts recently announced the release of Lord of Ultima, a new free-to-play browser based online strategy game set within the popular Ultima universe. Players will compete to grow their humble starting village to a powerful capital city through diplomacy, trade, and military conquest. The game also introduces social features, such as advanced trading, alliance creation, online chat and community forums, to the experience.

“Lord of Ultima was designed to ensure that everyone, from strategy newcomers to diehard fans, can make it to the top of the leader board,” said Volker Wertich, Creative Director at Phenomic. "Phenomic is committed to building dynamic communities that delight players as they interact with the game, each other and the legendary world of Ultima.”

To become the Lord of Ultima, players will master the arts of diplomacy and trade, as well as the military activities of spying, plundering, and the takeover of enemy cities. Set in the new world of Caledonia, players start the game as eager conquerors in the early stages of raising an empire, and then move from developing a humble village and evolving it into a prosperous, highly customized capital. Players can flourish as peaceful merchants by trading resources over land or sea and using diplomacy. They can also become feared conquerors, by creating mighty armies of knights and mages to crush enemies.

Blizzard Bans 320,000 Accounts
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 7 comments

In the company's continuing war against cheating on their service, Blizzard Entertainment has announced another round of account closures. 320,000 Warcraft III and Diablo II have been banned for violations to the terms of use agreement.

We’ve recently banned over 320,000 Warcraft III and Diablo II accounts that were found to be violating the Terms of Use. If this is a first offense, the CD key associated with the banned account will be suspended for 30 days, while repeat offenders will see their keys banned permanently. All account ban decisions are final.

We would like all players to remember that abuse of unintended mechanics and/or use of third party programs is a violation of the agreement made when signing on to, and can subject your account to disciplinary action up to and including a permanent ban of its access to the service. These types of activities can severely impact the stability of our servers, and we’ll continue to aggressively monitor in order to protect the service and its players from the harmful effects of cheating.

Many account closures come as the direct result of tips emailed to our hacks team by legitimate users. If you come across a hack, find a site responsible for distributing hacks, or have a replay of a newly available hack, please report this to our hacks team at or through our Hacks Report Form at

As always, thank you for your continued support, and we'll see you on!
