Virtual Programming has announced the Mac release of Hearts of Iron 3, the latest installment in Paradox Interactive's World War II war strategy series. The game allows players to choose from over 100 countries during the years 1936 to 1948, features nearly 15,000 provinces, and is five times larger than the previous installment.

“Hearts of Iron III offers the ultimate World War II simulation on the Mac,” said Mark Hinton, CEO of Virtual Programming. “The amount of depth and detail is so staggering that players will feel like they’re watching a documentary unfold.”

“We’re thrilled to see the latest entry in the Hearts of Iron strategy series arrive for Mac OS X,” said Johan Andersson, Executive Vice-President, Development, for Paradox Interactive. “The third edition is the most immersive and engaging strategy game we’ve ever developed.”

Since shortly after World War II ended, history buffs have debated “What if?” scenarios. The Hearts of Iron series has long given players the opportunity to play with such situations to their hearts’ content, and Paradox Interactive’s Hearts of Iron III offers the deepest experience yet. The Mac OS X version of the game is available now from Virtual Programming.

Players guide one of more than 100 countries between the years 1936 and 1948, making strategic decisions that could change the course of history. Hearts of Iron III features a huge map containing over 15,000 land and sea provinces, giving military commanders plenty of room to maneuver dozens of 3D air, land, and water units. Brute force isn’t the only option, however: players can engage in diplomacy with other nations as well as manage a realistic logistic system that ensures transportation of vital supplies.

Like other Paradox strategy games, Hearts of Iron III also stars military commanders and politicians based on their real world counterparts and driven by finely-tuned artificial intelligence that enables realistic interaction with them. The flexible technology tree allows players to choose from hundreds of categories for improving their forces’ capabilities, while a dynamic weather system impacts battlefields in realistic ways.

System Requirements:
  • OS X 10.5.8 or higher
  • Any Intel CPU
  • GeForce 7300, Radeon HD 2400 (GMA cards not supported)
  • 128 MB VRAM, 1GB RAM
  • 1.3 GB hard disk space
  • Broadband connection for Internet play & Product Registration
Hearts of Iron 3 costs $39.95 (£29.95 €34.95). Click over to the links below for more information.

6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Tycoon Games, developer of several dating sim and visual novel games, has announced the release of Heileen 2: The Hands of Fate, a sequel to Heileen. The game takes place on a mysterious Caribbean island where Heileen and a few of her friends found themselves at the end of the first game. To succeed Heileen must make use of a deck of tarot cards. Heileen 2 features more than 12 possible endings and an enhanced quest system.

“This game is the longest I have ever made, and it features many scenes of beautiful and unique anime-inspired artwork. The player controls the flow of the story. With eighty-four decisions in the first part alone, each playthrough is a new experience.” - said Celso Riva, game designer/programmer of the game.

The game takes place on a mysterious Caribbean island where Heileen was shipwrecked at the end of the first game. Her ex-slave friends Robert and Ebele will help her survive, but when Heileen discovers a deck of tarot cards representing the seven deadly sins and the seven godly virtues, she realizes that the power of the cards can help her unlock the secrets of her past and shape her future. With the tarot cards, she can escape from the island, find her true love, meet pirates, or do nothing at all. Will Heileen be a Saint, or a Sinner? It's all in the hands of the player!

The game also features an advanced version of the Quest System present in the first title. With more than twenty quests to solve, some spanning multiple chapters, Heileen 2 is an engaging challenge and an exciting adventure that players will love.
Heileen 2: The Hands of Fate costs $19.99 and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or greater. A demo is available at the website below.

Vendetta Online: Scanners, Radar Extenders, Holiday Sale
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Guild Software has posted an update on the news blog for the massively-multiplayer online space strategy game, Vendetta Online. The posting catalogs recent updates to the game as well as special fifth anniversary limited edition merchandise on sale during the holiday season.

We released the Cargo Scanner and Scanner Blocker. The Scanner allows any player to scan the cargo of other ships, including NPCs in the process of mining (see what they mine, in real-time). The Scanner Blocker prevents others from scanning your cargo.

Our previous release launched the Shared Group Radar Extender. This AWACS-like addon allows a single equipping player to permit all other nearby players (in the same group) to share their radar data. This is particularly important in dense asteroid fields, thanks to the recent addition of asteroid radar occlusion.

Beyond this, we've also just launched some special, limited-edition, Five Year Anniversary merchandise. These shirts and other items will only be offered during the 2009 holiday season, before they vanish forever. See our News page for more information on all of the above:

VO 1.8.104 includes:

  • Small-port Cargo Scanner and Scanner Blocker (available in capitol stations)
  • Fix for convoy traders repeatedly bumping convoy capships.
  • Slower top speed for convoy capships.
  • PCC Mission Editor additions: give-item-to-npc, park and drift actions,gave-money-to-npc event.

Big Machine Games Coming To Macs
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Koonsolo Games, developers of Mystic Mine, have announced Big Machines Games, a news series of entertainment titles. The games will put players in control of bulldozers, dump trucks, excavators and other heavy equipment. The first in the series, Big Bulldozer, is currently in development.

Toy cranes, dump trucks and other machines are very popular among young boys. Even adults have fond memories of them. But strangely enough there aren't many video games that feature them. The few that do, are realistic simulations lacking any form of gameplay. Koonsolo Games is therefore going to put some fun and refreshing gameplay elements into their Big Machine Games. It will be the perfect excuse to relive the fun you had as a kid, but this time packaged in a challenging game.
Big Machine Games will be available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. More info can be found on the official website at the link below.
