New Star Games has announced the release of New Star Soccer 2010. The latest version of the soccer game features gameplay improvements, a new match camera, a faster database, a new interface, and changes to artificial intelligence.

New features in NSS2010:

  • Improved Gameplay
    Player intelligence is vastly improved and there are enhancements in all areas of the game. Passing, heading, tackling, shooting... Everything feels much tighter and more fun to play.

Avernum 6 Nearing Release

Jeff Vogel, in a recent post on the official forums for Spiderweb Software, revealed that Avernum 6 is finished and should be available before the end of November. The final installment in the long running Avernum/Exile fantasy RPG series will bring the games to an apocalyptic ending, wrapping up storylines for the land and its popular characters.

Good news from the Avernum front. The game is done. It has been passing smoothly through beta testing. It should be out for the Macintosh before the end of November.

A lot of work recently has been on balancing the late game. A lot of people had trouble with the difficulty of Avernum 5. I've been working hard to make sure that when you're playing on Normal difficulty you don't need to be super-skilled to just get through the storyline. Of course, if you want a challenge, Hard and Torment difficulties are available.

Also, if you want things to be really easy, the character editor and cheat codes are still in there.

Almost all of the graphics in the game have been redone. I'm putting the final touches on the completely refreshed item graphics.

The game is, as is traditional, enormous. There is a LOT of stuff to do, and the main storyline alone is full of excitement and incident. And be careful about who who help. Your actions can result in drastically different futures for the world of Avernum.

Today, I am putting together the final version of the application and sending it to testers. Then, barring disasters, I'll start on the million different bizness things I need to do to finish a game. I hope to have more screenshots up very soon.

The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy Of Time Q&A

MacGamer recently posted an interview with Presto Studios' Tommy Yune about the company's remastered version of Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time for Mac OS X. JP3 continues the classic adventure story of the Temporal Security Agency and Agent Five. The enhanced version combines the contents of the original four CDs onto one DVD, and features completely remastered graphics and cinematics.

MacGamer: When did the idea of developing an enhanced DVD version for the Mac OSX occur and why?
TY: After Windows Vista broke compatibility with the PC versions of The Journeyman Project trilogy, I realized that Apple’s completion of the Mac’s transition from PowerPC to Intel processors would leave us with no readily playable game from The Journeyman Project series on present-day platforms. There are hobbyists out there who have figured out how to get old PowerPC versions to work through jerry-rigged emulation setups, but playing games is supposed to be enjoyable, not nerd torture, especially on a Mac… and the very first The Journeyman Project was developed on Macs! Programmer Roland Gustafsson was motivated by the fact that his daughter wanted to play The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, and it wouldn’t run on his Intel-based MacBook. So the two of us quietly collaborated on this little project over a series of many weekends.

MacGamer: Were there any specific challenges during the project regarding development?
TY: For me, it was tracking down the best looking version of all the graphical assets. Most were derived from the enhanced Windows DVD-ROM version, which boasts double the video playback resolution of the original CD-ROM release. A few key segments were re-encoded from the original uncompressed materials as past bandwidth problems were no longer an issue. We were even able to toss in one extra easter egg.

The one technology wall that Roland encountered in updating The Journeyman Project 3 was the renderer of the 360 degree spherical VR panoramas because the company that originally developed it had since gone out of business. After some hard work he was able to get that piece of code Carbonized, a transitional technology that allowed minimum compatibility for Mac OS X. The ideal solution would be to move the technology over to a hardware-accelerated cubic VR renderer like the one Presto later used in Myst 3, but that would require reprocessing every single VR node.

Warhammer Online: The Road To Mac

Macworld has published a new interview with Josh Drescher and Jeff Skalski of Mythic Entertainment about the recently released Mac version of Warhammer Online. The game features Realm vs Realm combat and allows players to enter a grim fantasy world where the armies of Order (Dwarfs, High Elves, and Empire) and Destruction (Greenskins, Dark Elves, and Chaos) collide to determine the fate of nations.

What has changed for the Mac version? The answer: not a whole lot. “We wanted to make sure this wasn’t a second-class game,” explains Josh Drescher. Though the PC version launched over a year ago, a Mac version has always been in the works: “We wanted to bring this to the Mac platform.” Through their collaboration with Electronic Arts (Warhammer Online’s publisher) and TransGaming, they’ve been working on this project for a while. Drescher says that they wanted the Mac version to be released as close to the initial launch as possible.

Drescher and Jeff Skalski explained that even though Mac users rarely are thought of as gamers, Mac users are just as passionate about gaming. Though it’s the first time they’ve developed a title for the Mac platform, “We’ve been looking forward to launching on the Mac,” explains Drescher. The game itself was ported via TransGaming’s Cider Portability Engine. According to the Cider Website, the engine acts as a "wrapper" around the game software, enabling it to run seamlessly on Intel-based Macs. Mac users will be playing against and with their PC counterparts on shared servers.

“We wanted to make it a welcoming experience,” explains Drescher. That said, Skalski was quick to point out the mantra for the game, “War is everywhere.” When you first begin the game, if you’re an agent of Chaos, you’ll first start out by trying to burn down a village. If you’re an agent of the Empire and its allies, you’re trying to protect a village. “There isn’t a safe place for playing with drums and poking wood nymphs in the eye,” muses Drescher, chiding some of the more peaceful fantasy MMORPGs on the market. While most MMORPGs will lead you into the more intense aspects of the game slowly, Warhammer Online offers no hand-holding. “We wanted to make sure when you started game, you were in the middle of combat. From start to end game,” adds Skalski.

Inside Mac Games has posted the latest feature in the Inside iPhone Games series. This time, the series looks at that other NFL football game, Gameloft's NFL 2010, Alawar's Gourmania, and the rally racing fun of Rally Master Pro from Fishlabs. Here's an excerpt from the article:

For most computer rally-racing fans, the Colin McRae series of rally games (pre-Dirt) are the gold-standard by which all other rally games are compared. By this lofty yard stick, Rally Master fares pretty well. As I said, the graphics are top notch for the platform, and are nearly as detailed as some of the earlier next-gen McRae games. The courses come in a wide variety of environs, although unlike the McRae series, there are no distinct geographical regions specified during the game. You will find yourself racing on dirt, gravel, tarmac, and in snow and rain. While the handling for these surfaces is mostly spot-on, I found that the tarmac sections were decidedly less forgiving than those in the McRae series.
