City Of Heroes Issue 16 Trailer Available

NCsoft and Paragon Studios have released a new trailer showcasing the recently launched Issue 16: Power Spectrum for the comic book inspired massively multiplayer online game, City of Heroes. The central focus of the update is Powers Customization, a feature long desired by fans of the MMO.

EVE Online Dominion Public Beta Testing

CCP Games has released a new developer blog focusing on upcoming changes to its sci-fi MMO, EVE Online. The post explains some of the public events planned for the test servers as the developers get ready for the release of the Dominion update.

First Test:
There will be three tests. The first will be to test changes made to faction ships resulting from feedback we gained as a result of our last public test event. A wide array of faction ships will be provided and you will have an opportunity to give us your opinions on the changes. It is important to remember these changes are not final.

Second Test:
Also you may have heard rumors of changes to super capitals. These rumors are true. As detailed in CCP Abathur’s latest devblog, we have changed some aspects of these massive ships. Supercapitals will be provided for you all to go mad and get a feeling for them. Your feedback will be collected and taken onboard, as the rebalance of super capitals is also subject to change.

"That’s all well and good but I can’t fly them." This is indeed an issue that will limit how many of you are able to test the changes. So, we have decided to give you all every skill at level 5.

This is strictly on the test server and is of itself not a regular occurrence. The elevated skills will only be in effect for the duration of the supercapital test, estimated to be a 48 hour period. I hope you can all find time to come along and give us your opinions on some of the features of Dominion.

Third Test:
As detailed in CCP Abathur’s devblog and CCP Grayscale's devblog, changes are being made to how claiming and holding sovereignty works. These changes are also not finalized and the mechanics are not complete. So here is a brief overview of how the first test of sovereignty works.

Two alliances (Red and Blue) will be created on Singularity and players will be invited to join them and duke it out for control of a small area of space. Your opinions will be gathered on this part of the new sovereignty system and will be relayed to the team responsible.

Spore Creature Creation Goes Flash

A new Flash based online version of the Spore Creature Creator is now available. The web version of Maxis and Electronic Arts's creature creation sim allows users to craft a unique creature, save it, email it to others, and play with it online in a creature trainer.

Now available for free at, players can create a creature from scratch or import a creature from the Sporepedia™, the library of 120+ million pieces of user-generated content in Spore. Five legs or ten, bat wings or horns; there are no limits to what users create. Once players have created their 2-D creature, they can embed it onto their social networking pages, and share it with friends via email. Spore Creature Creator 2-D takes creature-creating to new heights by making it a social, shared experience.

“Spore Creature Creator 2-D offers players a brand new way to express their creativity and share their creatures as it can be played by anyone with internet access,” stated Caryl Shaw, Sr. Producer of Spore Creature Creator 2-D. “The clean art style and intuitive point-and-drag functionality makes it easy for creators of all ages to get in on the fun. It’ll be interesting to see how players use this new creative application.”

Spore Creature Creator 2-D features the full suite of more than 250 body parts, including limbs, eyes, feet, heads, and fun accessories like antlers and wings. Once players create their ultimate creature, they can play with them in the Spore Creature Trainer mini-game. Once complete, players can easily send their friends an e-card of their creature.

Wolfire's John Graham Discusses Indie Game PR

Gamasutra has posted a new article on a recent speech at GDC Austin by Wolfire Software's John Graham. During the discussion the developer revealed the company's methods of advertising its software through a variety of internet outlets and identified how other independent developers could make use of the same techniques. Wolfire is known for its action martial arts game Lugaru and the title's upcoming sequel, Overgrowth.

He pointed out that, with indies, you can practice 'open development' - divided into making noise, making friends, and building a community. Starting with 'making noise', Graham stressed openness at all times. Discussing things such as piracy helped some indies get a lot of extra attention, for example.

Sharing content on your website that isn't just game-related is key, noted Graham. If you add posts on game design or even personal experiences -- or perhaps even April Fool's jokes, such as Small Tank, which was picked up several places on April 1st this year. Wolfire's David Rosen also made video-based 'design tours' for a number of indie games like World Of Goo that got picked up by many outlets.

Cross-promotion is also key. The main rabbit character in Overgrowth now appears, in various styles, in other indie games such as Cletus Clay and Gratuitous Space Battles. And getting the word out to the press, both via email and in person at conferences, is key to your product becoming recognizable and well promoted.

In addition, the Overgrowth creators noticed that only 30% of its traffic was coming from the U.S., and only 50% was from countries where the primary language was English. So they started their 'Overt Ops' program, with translations into 20+ languages and some notable pickup by Russian press.
