DOFUS: First Inter-Server Tournament Underway
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

The first inter-server tournament for Ankama's Flash based MMO, DOFUS is now underway. Titled Goultarminator, the tournament allows players from different DOFUS communities to face off against each other. The battles will continue until the final on August 29th when the 64 best teams will face each other once more, until only one team remains standing. The winning team will receive several rewards for themselves and their server.

The World of Twelve’s first inter-server tournament allows the best characters of all servers and all classes to face off against each other in epic combat. After a tough selection process based on two challenges (one of speed, the other of character), no less than 353 characters are about to challenge each other, much to the delight of the on-looking crowds! At the moment they are getting together into groups of 3 characters and will battle other teams during four weeks of exciting combat. At the end of these 3 weeks, the 64 best teams will face each other once more, until there is only one left. The winning team will then collect their laurel wreaths and several rewards, for themselves and for their server.

During the tournament, community challenges (in the form of riddles to solve, or groups of monsters to decimate, for example) will be organised in order to allow all players, whatever their level, to win points for their server. Each one will be able to show their team spirit by supporting their champions and fighting for their server to win the day!

As a tournament, Goultarminator unites players for the same cause, but it also corresponds to the DOFUS team’s desire to make events more exciting and dynamic.
Sylfaen, DOFUS Community manager, explains: “Goultarminator is the start of a new, exciting way of doing things for DOFUS’ Community manager team. The objective is simple: to strengthen the links within communities through competition. The event will allow the team to test new tools which will help us make this kind of event a regular thing.”

Following the appearance of a mysterious Zaap (teleportation gate) in the Treechnid Forest, terrible things have hit the World of Twelve, arousing anger in the local flora and fauna … but also spreading panic amongst the inhabitants of Amakna. The mystery was solved with the arrival of a letter from Goultard the Barbarian announcing a tournament allowing characters from each class and each server to face off against each other in teams in a unique event…

So let it be known! Goultarminator is just the beginning of a series of tournaments, each promising to be more amazing than the last!

Vendetta Online Adds New Ice Effects
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Guild Software recently released a new update for its sci-fi MMO, Vendetta Online. Among other things patch includes the addition of new ice effects for users with graphics cards offering Shader 2.0 support, and for users with older graphics cards.

The "new" ice effects should be visible on any card with Shader 2.0 support (ATI 9600+, Nvidia 5200+), but may not work with certain Intel video chips and the like. On the Mac, this probably also requires 10.4, at least. For those cards without Shader 2.0 support, there is yet another "improved ice" effect, that is still better than the original, and should work down to our lowest supported hardware.

The new ice is refractive, meaning that you can actually see "into" the ice (but not all the way through it, for performance reasons). As you move around the ice, or it moves, you see modulations in the refraction. The ice is actually not reflective, but does kind of appear so due to some rendering-order artifacts that we may correct eventually.

The ice is also a lot darker than it used to be. The sheer brightness of our 10-year-old EMBM ice was never quite right, and made it not blend very well with other objects in the galaxy. Now the ice can be bright in bright sectors, but dark in dark sectors.

WoW: Rogue Q&A
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has posted the latest in its series of World of Warcraft class Q&As. This time Greg Street and the World of Warcraft Development Team focused on the Rogue. The discussion covered a range of topics including the Rogue's role in the game, elements unique to the class, and future plans.

Q. Where do rogues fit into the larger scope of things currently and where do you see them going from this point forward?
A: They’re a premier melee dps class -- the personification of skulking and swashbuckling flair. It’s their primary and only role -- they’re not going to turn into tanks or healers.
Rogues were once the best dps class hands-down, and a lot of the other classes were just there to buff rogues. Rogues were supposed to be selfish and not bring many buffs or utility of their own. We’re not really happy with that design any longer, and have pushed rogues to be a little more normal -- great damage in the right conditions, but also some good utility and synergy as well.
Rogues have nearly always been strong in PvP, just because their shtick of coming out of stealth to stun and then unload on an opponent translates so well to everything from Arena to random world ganking.

Q. What is it that makes them unique compared to all other classes?
A: Rogues have a complex resource system with the balance between energy and combo points, and rely on active abilities to respond to situations rather than passive effects. This leads to a very interesting tension between planning out what you’re going to do ahead of time and reacting to proc-based resource gains (energy/combo points from things like Combat Potency, Relentless Strikes, and Ruthlessness), and rationing your active timers and abilities to survive.
