Now Boarding 1.2 Released

Independent game developer Gabob LLC has released and update for Now Boarding, the company's action-tycoon game. In Now Boarding, passengers must get to various destinations before they freak out. The patch brings the game to version 1.2 and includes a new map, a new option for tracking city size, performance improvements, and a variety of bug fixes.

In Now Boarding the player renovates the terminal, adding restaurants and shops to keep passengers pacified. Purchasing larger and exotic aircraft increases the capacity of passengers that can be delivered. Expanding to new cities adds customers, giving the player more income, but also magnifies complexity. Hiring employees to take over some tasks is critical in order to handle the increasing load.

The version 1.2 update is the result of ongoing efforts to bring value to fans, and further refine the game. Existing users can get the latest update by visiting their website. Features of the new update:

• Significant effort went into increasing the performance. When gameplay gets hectic, the game keeps running smoothly.
• The update includes a new map - The Caribbean! The Caribbean presents a unique layout of cities that requires new strategies. Some cities are huge and expensive, but many of the small islands are cheap. Also watch out for cities evacuating from hurricanes during parts of the year.
• New interface feature - players can now see which cities are growing or shrinking at the end of a month. When passengers from a city stay happy, that city will grow, bringing more customers.
• Thanks to great feedback from the players, the reported bugs were fixed, and gameplay is refined.

iGame Radio Logo Contest Deadline Approaches

The iGame Radio Logo Contest has only nine days left before the May, 22 submission deadline. It now has seven sponsors, five logo submissions, and a prize package worth $770. Launched in February, the logo contest asks entrants to design a new logo for the iGame Radio podcast.

The prize package of $770 features software and hardware from sponsors MusicSkins, PopCap Games, Howling Moon Software, Creaceed, Griffin Technology, Codeweavers, and Omni Group. Prizes include CrossOver Mac Pro, OmniGraffle 5 Pro, Tunebuds mobile, and Peggle for the Mac.

“We’re really thrilled with the variety of submissions we’ve received for this contest,” said Omaha Sternberg, host and producer for iGame Radio. “This shows the wonderful diversity and creativity within the Mac community.” Ms. Sternberg encouraged everyone to comment on each submission, as all contestants are allowed to make minor changes to their submissions before the deadline. All logo submissions are currently located on the iGame Radio Flickr site.

Contest information, including rules for format and submission, are located at the iGame Radio Logo Contest page. The contest will run until May 22nd, after which the logo will be chosen through a public vote over a week long span. The prize package currently valued at $770 will be offered to the grand prize winner, but all entrants will gain a free t-shirt of their choice from the iGame Radio Café Press store.

Hollenshead: id Focuses On Games First, Licenses Second

Gamasutra has published a new interview with id Software's CEO Todd Hollenshead. The developer discussed his commitment to keep the company's focus on creating games rather than on a pursuit of licensing the Tech 5 game engine. While the company will license the technology, Hollenshead said he wanted to avoid licensing the game to developers who might not make use of Tech 5's full potential.

"It's been more of kind of actually going out and targeting developers, or responding to their requests and actually going out and actually working with them on an individual basis, as opposed to a more kind of marketed, kind of broader approach," Hollenshead explains.

"Our philosophy on that has been that we'd rather have a small number of good-fit, high-quality developer licensees than a bunch that aren't really good fits or that may not be that bright of a licensee anyway."

Part of that is to maintain a certain reputation. "We think that the licensees...are going to have an impact on how the technology is perceived," the CEO adds.

Although it has not done much large-scale licensing promotion, the company has already "seeded tech out to a few licensees," according to Hollenshead, and the engine's development is on track.

"The main things has been getting the tech to the 'done' stage, where things aren't moving around, and people can set expectations about how they're going to do their budgets," he says. "It's to that point. There's no significant engineering risk about whether things will work or not."

NWVault Announces 2008 Module Of The Year

NWVault recently announced the winner of its 2008 Neverwinter Nights Module of the Year Award. Fester Pot's Shadewood scored top honors in the Neverwinter Nights category. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards went to La Spada di Belchen: Parte I, Revenant, and Tales of the Heart, respectively.

In the Neverwinter Nights 2 category A Hunt through the Dark Remastered by Markus "Wayne" Schlegel was named module of the year.

More about Shadewood:

This module was created for a Wizard or Sorcerer of any sex and race that has completed Almraiven. It is a continuation of that adventure and is not a stand-alone module.
The adventure takes place within the nation of Calimshan in the Forest of Mir, Spider Swamp and Marching Mountains.
Shadewood is a full wilderness adventure and is the second and final installment of two modules.
