Virtual Programming Releases A Vampyre Story For Mac

Virtual Programming has announced the release of its newest adventure game title, A Vampyre Story. Developed by Autumn Moon Entertainment, the point and click adventure tells the tale of opera singer Mona De Lafitte who struggles with her new life after being turned into a vampire. Players help Mona in her quest to sing at the Paris Opera despite her creature of the night status.

Deep within the walls of a gloomy castle in the equally gloomy land of Draxsylvania, the young, gifted opera singer Mona De Lafitte is held captive by her tormentor, vampire Baron Shrowdy von Kiefer. Ever since she was transformed into a vampire by Shrowdy and whisked off to Draxsylvania, her greatest wish has been to return to Paris, continue her singing career, and one day become a star at the Paris Opera.

When Shrowdy fails to return from a nightly foray, she at last sees an opportunity to flee. Together with her only friend and confidant, a cheeky bat named Froderick, she escapes from her prison and tries to find her way back to Paris. During her flight through Draxsylvania, where she encounters some strange inhabitants and some even stranger challenges, Mona must learn not only to accept her vampire nature, but also to use the abilities she has acquired to her advantage.

The classic adventure "A Vampyre Story" is penned by Bill Tiller, who was involved in the creation of such milestones of the genre as "The Dig" and "The Curse of Monkey Island". Players use a point-and-click interface to direct Mona and Froderick through a richly detailed world consisting of more than 30 beautifully hand-painted locations that utilizes real time 'Multiplane' camera technology, that entice the viewer to examine and explore. On her puzzle-filled journey to Paris, Mona meets more than 20 3D-characters, ranging from the just plane silly to the very strange, in over 15 hours of brain-teasing fun.

IMG Reviews Diner Dash: Flo Through Time

Inside Mac Games has posted a review of the latest in the Diner Dash series from PlayFirst, Diner Dash: Flo Through Time. In this sequel, Flo and her grandmother find themselves stuck in the past. The only way to get back to the future? Build diners to make money to buy parts for their time machine, of course! Here's and excerpt from the review:

If you've played previous games in the series before, though, the one thing that's likely to surprise you about this one (well, it surprised me) is just how difficult it is. If you are a newcomer to the series, DO NOT start with this game! I've played a few of the Diner Dash games through to completion, now, and thought I was pretty good at them. Flo Through Time has demonstrated to me the full extent of my arrogance. In fact, I'm ashamed to say that I'm writing this review having seen only 58% of the levels, because level 9 in the third group of ten (the mediæval All Knight Diner) has defeated me. Its pass requirement is 19,000 points and, try as I might, I haven't as yet managed to get more than 18,400; so I have yet to discover what the last two historical settings are like.

Diablo III: Trailer, Wallpaper, Damage Calculations

More information is now available about Diablo III, Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming return to the popular action RPG series. Community manager Bashiok again offers insight into the working of the game, Apple has posted a game trailer for Diablo III, and Blizzard has added 4 new wallpaper images to the official website.

On having DPS calculated for the player:
Having DPS there, as you said, provides a quick comparison if that's all you want, and I'd argue that for many players, that's all they'll probably need or care about. For you and others who want to delve into the the specifics of the damage, how it's being put out, as well as how effective it is, then that information is all still there. In fact we're actually giving the player a lot more information now if they want to crunch numbers.
So to have DPS shown, it's a quick comparison for most people. If you want more information, then that's there too. Having the DPS shown has good reasons, but removing it would just be for the sake of "it wasn't in a previous Diablo game".
I will agree it's not the best metric to gauge damage output in this type of game, but it is the simplest way to show a basic power difference between two items for beginning players.

On what sort of stash size we can expect:
I don't think there could ever be enough space to keep some players from shuttling items to mules. It's going to happen. But making it a comfortable amount of storage, as well as having ways to easily and safely get items to and from characters are definitely goals to have.

Kivi's Underworld Review, Character Profiles

Mac|Life has published a new review of Soldak Entertainment's casual action RPG, Kivi's Underworld. In Kivi's Underworld players adventure as one of 20 character classes against a variety of dangerous foes. Mac|Life gave the game a score of 3 out of 5.

From the review:

The linear plot follows Kivi, a lumen warrior who’s trying to defeat the malevolent dark elves, who were unleashed after some kind of mining mishap. Along the way, more characters join the cause, but you don’t play with a party as in other RPGs. This is pure hack-and-slash combat: You’re controlling one character through each level, trudging through a dungeon killing everything in sight while hunting for the level’s ultimate goal (a set of hidden items, a hostage needing rescue, and so on).
Each character class has different attributes and fights with a regular and special attack, but the game doesn’t require you to level them up separately. Instead, at the end of each stage you get skill points that you use to level up all the characters at once. It’s a great blend of variety and simplicity.
The levels feature tons of monsters to kill, plus dozens of power-ups, traps, hidden rooms, and locked doors. Finding the hidden rooms can be a frustrating matter of clicking every stretch of wall you walk by before tripping the trap doors, but hunting them all down pays off when you win more skill points at the end of a stage.
Soldak has also released four new character profiles, detailing some of the playable characters gamers can find and unlock during the game.

Savage 2: A Tortured Soul 1.7.8 Patch Released

S2 Games has released the promised 1.7.8 patch for Savage 2: A Tortured Soul, a game which combines elements of first person shooter, real-time strategy, and role playing games. The update includes a variety of bug fixes and the introduction of the new Bunker map, a returning favorite from the original game.

Savage 2: A Tortured Soul is a fast paced multiplayer action title that takes team based game play to another level. Each match is a war for dominance where two teams of 5 to 17 players from two factions, beast or humans, attempt to destroy each other. It will take more than guns to finish the job. Players can choose from an array of units each with ranged, melee, and special abilities. To close the deal and seal the enemy's fate, players can take control of the ultimate siege units like the Behemoth or the Battering Ram used to destroy enemy buildings or even resurrect a burning demonic Hellbourne. For the more strategic player, each team has one commander who overlooks the battlefield and manages construction, research, and issues commands for strategic assaults.
