ToCA Race Driver 3 Reviewed
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

The Mac Observer has posted a new feature article covering the Mac version of ToCA Race Driver 3, the racing game developed by Codemasters. ToCa features 70 licensed cars, 80 licensed tracks, and more than 35 racing types. The Mac Observer recommended the game to fans of the genre.

From the review:

All of the cut scenes are fun, and Rick is an engaging character who sometimes lays on his Scottish brogue a bit too thick but is otherwise enjoyable to watch. I'm not 100% sure of this, but it looks like the cut scenes were filmed live and then rotoscoped with CGI. At any rate, they're a cut above the cut scenes you typically see in games like this one, where they tend to be more of an after-thought.

When you're racing, you'll also appreciate ToCA 3's excellent graphics and sound. Even on a mid-level computer like an iMac, the visuals are realistic, from the sunlight glinting off the cars to the dirt that gets kicked up if you stray off the track. The sound also makes you feel like you're in the middle of the action, especially the dirt that pings off the underside of the vehicle in the off-road races.

While the Rick-accompanied World Tour features a smorgasbord of racing types, Pro Career lets you stick with one of eight disciplines and work your way up the ladder, without his involvement. Unfortunately, if you want to race online against others, you're limited to the Mac-only service GameRanger. While GameRanger offers a good experience, it's always better to play against Windows gamers too, if possible; that way you have a much wider variety of competition.

Ambrosia Releases Aquaria For Mac
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 9 comments

Ambrosia Software has taken to the seas with the release of Aquaria for the Macintosh. The 2D side-scrolling underwater adventure game offers puzzles, exploration, and combat. Players take the role of Naija and work to unlock the secrets of her past while defeating or outwitting the various creatures they encounter along the way. Aquaria comes with a custom level and animation editor, allowing users to modify game play and share information on the developer's wiki and online forums.

More information about the game:

As players navigate through Aquaria's richly textured surroundings, they learn that one of Naija's gifts is that of "The Verse," the ability to sing combinations of musical notes to invoke her latent abilities. At first defensive, Naija's songs later give her ability to transform herself for combat, stealth, speed, and more, assuming players can survive the perils of the deep.

There are dozens of areas to explore containing new dangers and opportunities. Naija develops more skills and makes new discoveries about her past, often leading only to more questions...

The player easily adapts to the game's innovative mouse-only style of navigation, so that when the time comes to defend and attack, Naija is swift, agile, and her opponents are in for a world of hurt.

But the creatures lurking in Aquaria's depths have been there for a long, long time.

Developer and composer Alec Holowka and illustrator and developer Derek Yu comprise Bit-Blot, LLC, Aquaria's two-man development team.

The PC version has won multiple honors in the gaming community, including the prestigious Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game at the Independent Games Festival in 2007.
Aquaria for Macintosh is available today for $30 from Ambrosia's online store, with a 30-day free trial version available for immediate download. Follow the links below for more information.

GarageGames has announced an update to their Torque Game Engine Advanced (TGEA). This update adds an OpenGL graphics implementation and support for Mac OSX. Developers using TGEA 1.8 will be working with the same technology that GarageGames uses to provide Mac-compatible versions of popular games such as Fallen Empire: Legions, Rokkitball, and Marble Blast Online for its InstantAction browser based game site. Features include advanced material systems, procedurally generated shaders, integrated real-time editors, developer resources and thorough documentation.

"With this update to TGEA, cutting-edge games for both Mac and PC can finally be created in one development cycle," said Brett Seyler, GarageGames' VP of Business Development.

"Along with the release of a Mac-compatible InstantAction, our 3D games portal, GarageGames is really committing itself to Mac development," said Matt Fairfax, Senior Engine Developer at GarageGames and lead developer on TGEA. "The Mac and iPhone markets are very viable opportunities for game developers, so we're happy to provide proven technology that gives them a leg up."
