Garage Games is set to open its online gaming portal, Instant Action to Macintosh users.

Instant Action is for those gamers that want more than Bejeweled and Diner Dash from their web-based gaming. With familiar games like Think Tanks and Marble Blast and new games like Rokkitball and Legion: Fallen Empires, the portal is set to become the best 3D online gaming portal on the Web. The Mac beta is set to open next week, and you, our devout IMG readers, will be the first to try it out!

In order to enter the beta, be one of the first 100 to send your name and address to Make sure to send your message before Tuesday, June 24th, to be considered for this round of beta testing. You should receive an invite within two days and will then be able to check the service out.

The preliminary requirements for the service are an Intel processor, 10.4.11 or 10.5.2, and Safari 3.1.1 or Firefox or newer.

Based on the characters and storyline from the original book and later movie adaptation, The Princess Bride Game drops players into the action to stop the evil schemes of the prince and fight for a happily ever after.

Eschalon: Book I Reviewed

Mac|Life recently published a review of Eschalon: Book I, Basilisk Games' old school single player RPG. Inspired by classic role-playing games of the past the game sends players on a quest to uncover the mystery of their character's identity. Mac|Life gave the Book I a score of 3 out of 5.

From the review:

Eschalon is all about the numbers. When creating a character, you roll as many times as you like for your basic statistics (Wisdom, Intelligence, Strength, and so on). When you’re happy, you choose a class; each comes with a predetermined skill. Your place of origin and Axiom (morality) can have positive, negative, or neutral impacts on your stats, so choose wisely.

After you’ve created your character, you can only upgrade skills when you level up. Unfortunately, you can’t see how much each skill costs until you’ve picked them, and worse, if you don’t have enough points to gain a new skill or stat level, the game doesn’t tell you how many points you need to get. Finally, there’s no in-game tutorial, so when starting out you have to read the manual and learn from your mistakes.

Eschalon is a turn-based game, so nothing happens in real-time. Even walking is completely mouse driven. Combat is based on an initial assumption that everyone has a 50-50 chance of hitting something, after which the game applies your attack-based stats and bonuses and subtracts the enemy’s defensive stats and bonuses. This system is strange, since we can pretty much guarantee a better than 50-50 chance of hitting a rock.

Running Spore Creature Creator On A Mac Mini

The Unofficial Apple Weblog has posted directions detailing a method to run the recently released Spore Creature Creator on an unsupported Mac Mini. By default the program will not function on Macs with Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics.

Quite a few users were frustrated to discover that the recently released Spore Creature Creator won't run on Macs with Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics (basically Mac minis and older MacBooks). An enterprising TUAW reader has come up with a solution.

Clancy reports that the Creature Creator is running fine on his Core2Duo Mac mini with this modification. I'm not sure how well this will hold up on the full game (though the GMA 950 is supported on Windows), but if you have an unsupported Intel Mac and would like to have a look it might be worth it.

Entering The Empyrean Age

Eurogamer recently published a new article examining the PvP aspects of The Empyrean Age, CCP Games' latest expansion for EVE Online. Based on a novel of the same name, Empyrean age focuses on factional warfare and is designed to make PvP combat more accessible to all players.

PVP is an aspect of EVE that really emphasizes how much this is a multiplayer game: you can't hope to learn the ins and outs of combat on your own, and figuring out how best to fly with a gang of other players is where some of the greatest pleasures in EVE lie. Many players, especially ex-players, tell tales of being killed without even an idea of how they might have escaped, and the game does little to explain this to its denizens. It has fallen to the player corporations, and organisations such as Eve Ivy, to try and teach new players what they're up against. What the Empyrean Age is supposed to do is provide another way in to PVP play, giving players who want to indulge in the safety of Empire play most of the time some way to explore the PVP side of the game.

At the very far end of the PVP scale from Empyrean age's tentative steps there are the vast fleet battles involving hundreds, even thousands, of pilots. These have been taking place since the early months of the game, and have now entered a mature phase in which only the major players can expect to compete. Worse, this spectacular endgame of territorial alliance warfare is both tricky to access and laborious, even for hardened players. Getting involved means making a big commitment to the player-run corporations, and demands on time and patience that many players simply can't afford. CCP realises this, and knows that the only way many gamers are going to feel comfortable with player-versus- player combat - which they regard as the spirit of their game - is if it's mediated in some way through the game architecture. That architecture is the missions provided by agents.
