Magic: The Gathering Coming To Macs

Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have announced plans to extend the Magic: The Gathering franchise with a new game for Windows and Mac operating systems. Mind Control Software will be developing the new title set in the world of the popular fantasy card game.

“We’re excited to bring the Magic brand to new platforms and give our fans new ways to experience this great property,” said Jared Gustafson, Brand Director for Magic: The Gathering at Wizards of the Coast. “It’s partnerships like these that will advance the strategy games category and transform it to meet the needs and desires of today’s digital gamers.”

Magic: The Gathering, introduced in 1993, is the premier and original trading card game that inspired an entirely new game genre. Combining the dynamics of a card game with the excitement of trading and collecting, Magic™ offers fun for casual play, as well as the option of highly competitive tournaments. Magic: The Gathering currently has a thriving online edition (Magic Online®) made up of more than 350,000 active accounts. The game allows gamers to collect and trade virtual cards, build the perfect deck, get help from mentors, find opponents at all skill levels, and compete for prizes every day without ever leaving the comforts of home.
The announcement also revealed work on a separate MTG related game for Windows and Xbox 360 only, to be developed by Stainless Games. Specific details on the games Stainless Games and Mind Control will develop using the Magic: The Gathering IP will be announced at a later date.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Goes Gold

Aspyr Media announced today that Neverwinter Nights 2 has been declared Gold and will begin shipping to retail stores in North America next week. The computer role-playing game set in the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms, one of the popular campaign settings of Dungeons and Dragons, was licensed from Atari and developed for Mac by Aspyr Studios.

Aquaria Q&A, Mac Version Status

GameHelper has published a new interview with Bit Blot's Derek Yu and Alec Holowka. The Q&A covers topics related to Aquaria, Bit Blot's aquatic adventure title recently released for Windows and coming soon to Mac users as well. The side-scrolling underwater action adventure game follows the adventures of Naija as she embarks on a quest to reveal the history of the the underwater land of Aquaria.

Derek, the hand drawn beauty of Aquaria seems to be mostly your fault. What was your art process? 
Derek: I used almost exclusively Photoshop to do the graphics.  Most of my reference came from looking at underwater photos and real-life environments, but I also spent a good deal of time looking at artwork (especially conceptual artwork) from games, movies, etc., which I admired.  I think at one point I was studying that part in Harry Potter where he's underwater, roffle. 
I would have liked to have done more conceptual art, but with our time constraints and the large number of graphics, I had to jump straight to in-game art for a lot of things.  Only the most important things, like Naija, for example, got the concept art treatment.  Alec and I worked closely to bring out her design. 

Now that the game is finished, you're working on porting it to other platforms (Linux I hear too?). What else has changed since its release? 
Alec: Yeah, there's a Mac version coming up that should be out within a couple months or so. The game looks really sexy on OSX. The game also runs on Linux in a rough form - I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish that version. 
Recently I've been working on proper widescreen support, and we just got it working! It looks great, and we'll be releasing a Windows patch for that and a bunch of other fixes around the time that the Mac version comes out.

Apple Games Features Chess & Backgammon Classics

Apple Games latest feature article offers a review of Chess & Backgammon Classics for iPod. The game brings the classic board games to Apple's multimedia device with 2D and 3D display modes, adaptable skill level dependent on player ability, and three different modes of play. The article includes a review of the game's features and a history of both board games.

When you select Chess Classics, you’ll also have the option of entering quiz mode or viewing classic matches, complete with commentary. Quiz mode presents you with 10 puzzles to solve, such as figuring out the correct move that will result in checkmate; your score depends on how quickly you determined the right answer.

The classic matches include such well-known battles as the split match between Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov during the 1990 World Championship. You progress forward and backward through each contest one move at a time, with commentary appearing at key moments when the tenor of the action changed. You can even view a match played between early chess master Gioachino Greco and an unknown opponent during the 1600s.

The classic match commentary will help most chess players improve their games, but if you’re really inexperienced, you can also ask the computer for advice during a match. In addition to nine difficulty settings between “monkey” and “master,” you can give the computer one second, five seconds, or all the time it wants before determining a move. The faster it must make a decision, the greater the chance it will err.

Quazal Game Networking Available For Macs

Quazal, maker of the award-winning Net-Z, Rendez-Vous, and Spark! online multiplayer middleware has announced that it has added MacOS X to the list of supported platforms. The release of the Mac versions makes available all of the features already available to PC and console developers, and promises PC/Mac cross-platform play with "very little" added programming effort in many cases.

“With the growth of the Mac audience, the quality of the OS X platform, and the increasing interest of game publishers catering to that audience, Quazal has seen the need for a version of their technologies and services on Mac,” says Sylvain Beaudry, president at Quazal. 

“It’s often a challenge to find proven game development technologies on the Mac, and this will definitely help to bring more games with rich online experiences to the platform”, says Justin D’Onofrio, Producer at game developer Freeverse. “We are really happy to be early adopters and help Quazal provide their product to the Mac development community.”
